Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
There’s lots to like about Wolford House Bed and Breakfast. For starters it’s situated just outside historic Merrickville on a quiet secondary road across from the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO-designated world heritage site. A short walk past a number of interesting historic homes takes you to a couple of picturesque locks nearby. In the other direction you can stroll over to a day spa. As for the B&B, hosts Carol and Brian Carty have built their place especially for bed and breakfast.
Step through the front door into the large foyer of this immaculate bed and breakfast and the first thing you notice is the aged patina of the floors. Turns out the pine planks were made from logs reclaimed from the bottom of the Ottawa River. To your left is a small guest lounge with TV, DVDs & videos and internet access. To your right a comfortable and tasteful guest living room with fireplace. Pass through the adjacent dining room and you’ll find a fully equipped butler’s pantry with fridge, sink and the makings for coffee and tea.
Upstairs you’ll discover more pine floors and three spacious bed and breakfast guestrooms, all with en suite bathrooms and decorated in pine and antiques. The relaxing green Rideau View has two extra-long single beds covered in a country plaid. The Colonel’s Room has a queen bed and walls painted ‘picture gallery red? a heritage colour from Farrow and Ball. The Watchorn Room is often booked by honeymooners. Its curtains and bedding are blue toile and the walls are porcelain blue with fawn trim. There’s a shower and clawfoot tub in the bathroom.
The butler’s pantry comes into play again next morning when guests help themselves to coffee and juice. Breakfast starts with fresh fruit, homemade muffins or croissants and a main course such as orange French toast with locally produced maple syrup and bacon. Carol does a great job on the presentation. We had breakfast with votive candles glancing off an attractive fall-themed centrepiece. After breakfast, why not take your second cup of coffee out to the porch and set awhile in the comfy furnishings while contemplating your day. Before you leave though do take a wander across the drive to check out the Carty's antique shop.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
