Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
When I first came across an ad for Bluebird Meadows Bed and Breakfast outside Midland it certainly sounded interesting but seemed a little out-of-the-way. I wondered what was nearby to entice people to stay. Boy, did I find out. In fact, Donna and Larry Jerry’s exceptional bed and breakfast is close to lots of places. First off, Moonstone/Mt. St. Louis ski hills are less than 10 minutes away and Horseshoe Valley skiing is 20 minutes. Midland’s many attractions are but ten. Wasaga Beach is half an hour. Penetang’s Discovery Harbour less than half an hour. Plus there are a few other reasons to stay that have to do with food and just hanging out. Here’s the scoop.
This is a newer home situated south of Midland on 47 acres of meadows, wildflower fields and nature trails so it's perfect for walking, birding or cross-country skiing. It's on a quiet road in the scenic Oro-Medonte hills where the only sound might be bird song or the occasional coyote howl. The bed and breakfast area is entirely separate from the host’s quarters and, as you’ll soon discover, it has a few unique features.
First, there are two bed and breakfast guest rooms on the main floor; great for those with mobility impairments. (Enquire about your specific accessibility needs.) Second, bed and breakfast guests have access to a carpeted exercise room in the basement equipped with a treadmill, free weights, exercise benches and a satellite TV. Third, once you’ve worked up a sweat you can trot back up to the guest deck and have a soak in the 5-person hot tub. Summertime, you could then lounge about on the deck. Wintertime would likely find you in the guest common room enjoying the gas fireplace where the entertainment possibilities include magazines, card decks, board games and a satellite TV. There’s even an equipped kitchenette area with refreshments and skiiers often come back at lunch time to avail themselves of the amenities. And if you’ve ever despaired of bringing your pet along (most B&Bs don’t take pets and Midland's Bluebird Meadows is no exception), take heart. You can book B&B for your pet at a kennel just a few minutes away. Donna has all the details.
Now here’s the twist on food. Breakfast started with juice and fresh fruit accompanied by homemade muffins. Nothing new here. Then we had a delicious quiche. I was tempted to go for seconds. Nothing new with that either. Then Donna brought out the blueberry pancakes! Yikes! Believe it or not I ate those, too. We didn’t eat for the rest of the day. Well, actually we did go out for ‘dinner’. We feasted on starters at The Library Restaurant in Midland. It is truly exceptional – the best restaurant I’ve eaten at during my 2004 B&B research phase and I’ve been to some pretty good ones, including Toronto. In winter, as an option, Donna does a 'two night's stay with dinner' package which skiiers appreciate after a long day on the slopes.
I haven’t even talked about the décor of the rooms. Suffice to say you’ll like them all, though of the two main floor rooms I would recommend the Burgundy Room off the B&B entrance as it’s more private than the Brass Room which is right off the common area. Both have en suite bathrooms. The Brass Room has a queen-size bed and the Burgundy Room has a king size euro-topped bed. And if you need separate beds you can have up to four(!) in the second-floor Blue Room. Luckily, its en suite bathroom is a good size.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
