Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
You know that adage about following your dream? Well, Innisfree Bed and Breakfast hosts, Alan and Elaine Demaline, have done just that. As active kayakers they'd visited New Brunswick's legendary Hopewell Rocks while on vacation from Orangeville, Ontario where Alan worked for UPS and wore one of those famed brown uniforms. Now it's a uniform of another sort. Still shorts, but now it involves a flotation device. That's because, besides hosting the B&B, he works as a guide at Hopewell Rocks and escorts sea kayak excursions for visitors.
Innisfree bed and breakfast is an exceptionally busy place in season (warning: book well in advance) but Elaine was somehow able to juggle quality time with all her guests and look after their needs while Alan was out on the water. I was so impressed because they offer four rooms and that's a lot of people when often some are travelling with children.
Everything about this B&B is immaculate and well-maintained. As well, the rooms are attractive and the common areas plentiful. You have choice of a large comfortable living room, a furnished front verandah or a screened-in porch at the side where you can watch hummingbirds flitting about.
Elaine and Alan are a team par excellence in the kitchen as well. Elaine was the front person while Alan worked away behind the scenes. Breakfast was delicious. Fruit cup with homemade granola and yogurt to start. Blueberry muffins with homemade wild blueberry jam as a side. And Eggs Benedict with sausage or bacon and tomato as the main. That kitchen was spotless by the time the last guest left their table. There's energy to spare with these two.
The service continued even after we left. Alan knew we were heading to the rocks for high tide after having visited at low tide the day before. We were at the Hopewell Rocks parking lot and barely out of the car when we saw a vehicle racing in our direction. It was Alan with the aluminum water bottle I'd left in the room. I almost expected to see the brown uniform.
This was one of the priciest B&Bs we stayed at on our Maritime excursion. And, I might add, worth every penny.
