Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins

The Charlottetown B&Bs, at least the ones in which I was interested, were all booked up when I was looking for a place a month before my August arrival. Of course August is the busiest month of the year for tourists so lesson learned. Book way early. We decided to stay a 15-minute drive outside Charlottetown at Hydeaway House Bed and Breakfast which, incidentally, is much more reasonably priced than the Charlottetown B&Bs. It offers excellent value.

When we arrived host Levina Luymes was walking over from the new house next door where she and her family live. Turns out the bed and breakfast is their former home and is now used only for B&B guests. It's in a country setting overlooking a river with comfortable outdoor seating on the porch. All is enhanced by planters of colourful annuals.

Inside is nicely done as well and it turned out we had the place mostly to ourselves for the two nights we stayed. (A couple stayed one night but were gone early in the morning because they were helping set up for a wedding nearby.) It was like having our own house especially since Levina was amenable to us using the washer and hanging our laundry on the line out back.

We were happy to just kick back and enjoy our country home and make excursions into Charlottetown to visit relatives, do some sightseeing and have our meals. We tried the famed lobster diner, Prince and Water (our lobster roll was just OK) and another ritzier place in restaurant row downtown that was disappointing. On the other hand, lunch at the home of one of my friend's relatives was utterly delicious and memorable. Those biscuits!

Back at the B&B, Levina comes over to do breakfast. One morning we had an excellent granola, baked butterscotch buns and homemade bread with three different cheeses. Plus a strawberry banana smoothie. The other we had a firm-baked eggs in ham cups.
