Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a Stratford, Ontario bed and breakfast I recommend. Janette Higgins
For the quintessential B&B experience head straight for Stratford’s Caversham House Bed and Breakfast. It has elegance, charm, thoughtfully appointed guest rooms with en suite bathrooms AND personable hosts who enjoy interacting with their guests a little more than the usual. Not to worry though, Mary Lou Middleton and John McNeil know exactly how to walk the line and my guess is you’ll end up enjoying your stay even more because of it. That’s because they’re fun and easygoing, just like the kind of old friends you look forward to being with.
On arrival you’ll discover this pleasant bed and breakfast is close to everything Stratford has on offer. Downtown is two blocks away and The Festival Theatre a few blocks in the opposite direction. When you arrive you’ll note the comfortably furnished verandah that’s well-used when the weather’s fine. Inside, Mary Lou’s talented hand can be seen at work in the guest living room and adjacent TV room (John likes his sports!). Mary Lou spent her career in the décor biz and now she and John have settled in Stratford for a whole new career. She’s also a foodie so you can glean some insider tips.
John’s no slouch in the food department either; he’s the baker and from the start you’ll be able to partake of his treats. Always cookies in a jar, and just wait ‘til breakfast. Upstairs, the three guest rooms are beautifully furnished and every detail worked out to make your stay easy and comfortable. I’d forgotten makeup remover and I even found wipes for that purpose. When I commented on the dramatic chintz drapes in my room, I learned the fabric was Brunschwig and Fils, no less. Turns out fabrics figure strongly in Mary Lou’s design background.
I strolled over to the main street to dine at Pazzo’s. Good choice. I enjoyed a nice glass of Pino Grigio and their special menu of the day which included a delicious mushroom soup, tender English black pork from a local farm, and lemon-three-ways dessert. My total bill with tip was just over $60.
While I was out the hosts provided a turndown service and there was a special treat on my pillow; an exceptionally fine biscotti, delicious with tea the next day when I was on the road. Oh, but back to breakfast. As Mary Lou confided to me later it’s like doing a dinner party every morning. She’s right. We started with John’s raspberry muffins made with almond flour, then on to a frittata with little bundles of asparagus and cherry tomato salad with Irish soda bread. In Stratford the play’s the thing but for me the B&B experience figures just as strongly. Caversham House delivers.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Mary Lou and John know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
