Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a bed and breakfast I recommend in Rossport on Lake Superior. Janette Higgins

In researching B&Bs for this website I’ve had many versions of French toast ranging from ho hum to delectable. I’m sure you know what I mean. Which brings me to Island Shores Bed and Breakfast in Rossport, a village on Lake Superior 190 kms southeast of Thunder Bay. I’d had an enjoyable stay with hosts Gerry and Nannette Price. My room was comfortable, the hosts were delightful, and the décor throughout was a striking fusion of contemporary and up-north Canadiana. Then came breakfast. Gerry’s version of French toast was, quite simply, sublime. It was served with fruit and maple syrup, and was so artfully presented it could have made the pages of a foodie magazine.

But when it came time to make my decision I struggled about picking Island Shores B&B for my site. Why? While it had clearly exceeded several of my expectations, it had not met the most important one: privacy. There were two stumbling blocks. The bathroom was shared with the Gerry and Nannette; and the common area was their living room. Reluctantly, I decided to leave without revealing my true identity. But as I was paying Gerry mentioned upcoming renovations. That’s when I learned how they were going to change it up. As my confidence grew, I made the decision to reveal myself and asked them to keep me informed of their progress. I knew, without doubt, I’d be comfortable recommending their bed and breakfast when they were finished, without having to drive the 1200 kms each way to re-visit.

Two years later the privacy issue is no more. What a transformation. The Prices have moved their quarters to the third floor and guests have use of the first and second floors complete with fireplace and huge balcony. The first floor was the primary target for renovations. Here, there are now two completely new bed and breakfast guest rooms. I've only seen the pictures of course but I'm betting you'll be very happy. One is the sunny yellow and blue, 300-square-foot New Voyageur Room. Its luxe en suite bathroom has marble top vanity, whirlpool tub and in-floor heating. There’s a queen size bed plus a queen size sofa bed, a small bar fridge and 20 inch flat screen TV/DVD hidden in a hutch. At the back of the main floor is the cosy sage and cream Gitchee Gumi Room. Its en suite bathroom contains a shower and heated floor.

Upstairs, on the second level, is where you’ll find the common area with fireplace and huge walkout balcony. Plus the very private 2-room Rossport Suite, perfect for families or couples travelling together. This is also where you’ll have breakfast. I’ll bet your tastebuds will be dancing no matter what’s on offer. Think ‘Eggs in a Nest’ which is egg baked in phyllo pastry with fresh basil and green onions served with brined Canadian bacon and Hollandaise sauce. Come to think of it, maybe I DO have to make that 1200 km drive.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Gerry and Nannette know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
