Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
While many use Levis as a stopping point on the way to the Maritimes, the town itself is worth a visit. Once you get past the sprawling outskirts there is a charming historic area with hilly streets down to the St Lawrence. Levis is right across from Quebec City so the views are photo-worthy and for $3 you can take the ferry across to Old Quebec in minutes. As well it makes for a good starting point for a leisurely day or two exploring historic Highway 132 to the east. You’ll find any number of interesting stops including Port Joli renowned for its accomplished wood carvers.
Au Plumard Bed and Breakfast is on the edge of the original town of Levis. It’s one of those grand old homes with a spacious upstairs hall. We had a charming well-thought-out room, albeit small, with two twin-size beds, a desk, a chair and a door out to an attractive fire escape landing that had views over the town. The en suite bathroom was a good size and while the place was booked solid, so we couldn't peek, I suspect all the other rooms are bigger. Francophone hosts Anne and Andre are gracious about speaking English with those of us who stumble about in French.
Anne suggested several options for dinner. We decided to walk to L’Intimiste on Begin Street just a few blocks away. It had a pleasant, comfy ambiance complete with stone walls and upholstered chairs in the bar area. I started with breaded deep fried octopus with sauce and then had a large manicotti stuffed with veal and covered with 2 sauces. The food was tasty and the prices moderate. Wine by the glass is $5.70 for 3 oz. and $9 or so for 5 oz. That’s when I learned what 3 ounces really means. Not much! Afterwards, we crossed the road to a spot, obviously popular with the locals, where we had a soft ice cream dipped in ‘dark chocolate’, at least that’s what it purported to be. Bit waxy for my taste.
The big surprise here was breakfast. Few B&Bs go to the lengths Anne and Andre do to give you a breakfast to remember. We sat at individual tables and started with yogurt with fresh fruit and maple crunch. Then it was on to creamed mushrooms with toast points and a green salad with maple dressing. There was also grape taste teaser and a palate cleanser. We were fully loaded but as we got up to leave Andree hurried over to ask if we didn’t want dessert. Dessert? We thought he was kidding. But no. Dessert was a skewer of brownies, strawberries and banana with a chocolate sauce. So book well in advance and leave tummy room.
