Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
Alexander House Bed and Breakfast has been in Sandra Hartman’s family for several decades. Now she and husband, Stephen, offer their appealing 1930s Arts and Crafts home to appreciative bed and breakfast guests. Built by a local builder named Zagerman for his family it features oak woodwork and stained glass. The asymmetrical plan provides for a pleasant entrance hall and adjacent to it a comfortable living room with fireplace for guests. This bed and breakfast's guests can also enjoy the garden and are welcome to use the private patio out back.
The guest bedrooms are upstairs on the second and third floors and have been extensively renovated for bed and breakfast. All have queen size beds, down pillows and duvets and quality sheets and towels. All three bedrooms are pretty without being overly ‘matched’. The two on the third floor have en suite bathrooms. The Yellow Room’s bathroom features a one-person Jacuzzi whirlpool tub with shower. The Blue Room’s has a shower only. The small White Room on the second floor is rented as a single. It has a 3-piece private-use bathroom with its original black and white tile.
Next morning, Sandra’s typical nutritious breakfast starts out with OJ, yogurt, wheat-free granola and fresh fruit salad. Next, you might have omega 3 eggs to order or French toast with maple syrup accompanied by Danish bacon. There’s tea of, course, and coffee that’s freshly-plunged European.
This bed and breakfast’s historic Sandy Hill location is very convenient to most of Ottawa’s attractions. From here you can walk to Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, the Byward Market and the University of Ottawa. And if you’ve arrived by car, included in the price is off-street parking, an enviable amenity in a city where overnight off-street parking is at a premium.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
