Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a London, Ontario bed and breakfast I recommend. Janette Higgins
London’s Woodfield Heritage District is a neighbourhood of tree-lined streets and fine old homes within walking distance of Richmond Row which includes shops, restaurants, Victoria Park, the Grand Theatre, The John Labatt Centre and The Market on King Street, all places worth checking out when you’re in London. Woodfield Bed and Breakfast, a beautiful, architecturally-significant home, is in the heart of the district and hosts Anne and Damian Byrne offer three spacious bed and breakfast guest rooms with en suites. All are good value.
When I drove up I was taken by the large corner lot with gardens and an impressively well-maintained Victorian showpiece of a home. I was greeted by Anne in the gracious entrance foyer and shown the guest living room with marble fireplace and the dining room where there’s a small fridge with snacks, juices, bottled water and yogourts which guests are welcome to help themselves to. There is a flexible shoes-off policy here so, especially if the weather’s apt to be inclement, it’s an idea to bring ‘house’ shoes or slippers you can change into. I was there in dry summer weather so it wasn’t an issue.
I had reserved the West Room with queen bed and en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. It was attractively done in soothing neutrals and, though the smallest room, it was still a good size. There is also a window air conditioner. My favourite room was the queen-bedded East Side Balcony Room. Its bathroom may be smaller, with shower only, but this attractive bay-windowed room has a decorative marble fireplace and large balcony furnished with an outdoor table, chairs and umbrella. I know, though, that the Dufferin Room will be a favourite of some. Its generous size easily accommodates a king size bed fronting the bay of the window and its en suite bathroom has a Jacuzzi tub for two and a walk-in shower. All the rooms have high ceilings and elaborate mouldings lending them an elegant air.
Next morning, breakfast is continental but if you ask ahead of time you can opt for a full breakfast. Continental includes fresh fruit, juice, yogourt and toast, coffee or tea plus a choice of cereals. I had a full breakfast which includes any or all of the above plus eggs boiled, poached, or served as an omelette. My fruit was a delicious mix of berries and other summer fruits and I enjoyed one of Damian’s mushroom veggie omelettes. And being of Irish background, Anne made sure my tea was rich and full-bodied, just the way I like it.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Anne and Damian know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
