Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

Watched the Discovery Channel lately? If so, you've probably seen programs written and produced by Wild Rose B&B's host, Tom Hince. This man's passion is birds, photography and travel. He and wife Lily Shuster live in a raised Cape Cod in prime bird territory. There's a creek and 2 ½ acres of wooded property out back. You can walk to Wheatley Provincial Park. And a 20-minute drive brings you to Point Pelee.

Lily's no slouch either. A former Parks Canada manager, she's now a marketing consultant specializing in fund-raising. Besides being an avid reader and traveler, her other hobbies include gardening and decorating. The gardens are a long-term project but the decoration's complete with each good-size guestroom taking its cue from artifacts the two have brought back from their world travels. Ralph Lauren paint colours add to the pizzazz. La Selva's rainforest theme is picked up by the Flagstaff green walls with white trim. A Mexican desert theme defines the Saguaro with its chimayo red walls. South African artifacts and prints decorate the Hluhluwe room. Its private-use bath is next door. This is a raised bungalow and the bed & breakfast guestrooms are partly below ground level. While some guests are initially hesitant, once they see the large-windowed rooms with king-size beds and wall-to-wall carpeting, they're all smiles.

There's a cozy B&B guest common area on the bedroom level decorated in South West style with TV, a couple of couches, and a library organized into three sections -- birds, natural history and novels. In summer, though, most bed and breakfast guests find themselves outside on the back deck in animated conversation with the personable hosts. On cool evenings there's a chimenea (Mexican fireplace) to warm things up.

Next morning, you'll have breakfast upstairs in the dining area of the large open-concept space. Juice, homemade muffins and bread plus an egg dish such as strata or artichoke casserole will set you up for the day. And if you see any unfamiliar birds through the picture windows, you know whom to ask.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Tom and Lily know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
