Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
As you drive past a stone wall and pull into Viewfield’s drive the anticipation mounts. It’s pretty impressive, this huge, high-Victorian bed and breakfast which overlooks picturesque fields to river and town below. But it’s not until you’re inside being greeted by its friendly hosts, Lyn and Dick Mullen, and start to have a look around that it becomes apparent you’ve fallen into something altogether special.
The 12-foot ceilings, curved staircase and other architectural features are perfectly complemented by the furnishings. Lyn’s background in interior design is evident. An epistle could be written about the inside of this bed & breakfast; herewith but one example. While sitting in the beautiful period living room I learned that the fireplace with its remarkable hearth tiles and inlaid woodwork had been authenticated by the Royal Ontario Museum as dating from the time of Elizabeth I.
Upstairs, all four guest bedrooms are attractively decorated as well and it’s hard to choose a favourite. Perhaps the subdued Canon’s Suite, decorated in creams and greens with foyer and spacious bathroom. But then there’s the Alexander Shaw Room done in an Oriental theme with three-piece en suite. Or how about the one Sir John A Macdonald slept in several times with its own three-piece en suite. (The showers in these last two B&B rooms are compact but perfectly OK for an average-sized person.) Then there’s the Joan Creighton Room done in blues and whites – it’s the only one with a southfacing window overlooking that marvelous view. It shares a bath with the Mullens just outside, but there is a handy in-room pedestal sink.
Next morning, Lyn and Dick, working from their large kitchen, will prepare your breakfast. Candlelight and soft background music add to the mood of the formal dining room set with crisp linen and silver chargers. They both love to cook so prepare for a feast. By the time you leave Viewfield Inn bed & breakfast I have little doubt you’ll be scheming your return.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Lyn and Dick know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
