| B&B owner Chef Stephen Hunter's quirky side is showing. That's a line from Jabberwocky on the stair risers. |

Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
Victoria Village Inn is Chef Stephen Hunter's unique approach to bed and breakfast and comes complete with Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky poem on the risers up the stairs to the rooms. The literary references don't stop there. This B&B is close to Victoria Village's summer theatre and as such, on theatre nights, there's lots of action in the neighbourhood. No theatre the two nights we were there though. We strolled the pleasant grid of streets and dropped into a few of the shops offering local artisan's wares including one with particularly good coffee and hot chocolate.
Expect personable service and simply furnished rooms at this bed and breakfast inn along with a touch of 'quaint'. Our room had a door that didn't close easily and a small en suite bathroom. And here's a tip. If you book early enough you can get the room on the main floor with its own tucked-away front verandah. Great spot for sipping a glass of wine before dinner and watching the world go by.
Stephen himself is a charming fellow and the inn is really a place to hang his chef's hat. Make sure you make a reservation for dinner. Guests of the inn receive a 10% discount. Even if you're not staying and you're within a 30-45 minute drive it's well worth the trip to dine. Of course in-the-know theatre goers will have made their reservations early.
Stephen sources most menu items locally and one night the mains included lobster and sugar pea risotto with asiago cheese and pea shoots, Harmen Farm roasted chicken breast with wild mushroom saute and an 8 ounce grilled island beef tenderloin with bernaise sauce. The first two were $22 and the steak was $30. Starters included a seafood chowder, island mussels in white wine with herbs and Salutation Cove oysters on the halfshell. At $2 each the oysters were a good buy considering what we pay at home. The second night I had a perfect bouillibaise with halibut and other seafood and my friend had duck breast with fresh vegetables and potatoes. All was perfectly executed. And, of course, there is a wine list.
Stephen shoots his creative bolt at dinner and for breakfast it's back to the basics. We had fruit with a raspberry coulis, bran muffins, and a choice of either scrambled eggs with bacon and home fries or poached eggs.
All good. Just don't expect gourmet.

Victoria-by-the-Sea is a seaside community between Charlottetown and Summerside on Prince Edward Island. It's about 25 minutes from the Confederation Bridge. The B&B is in the village near the summer theatre. |
| Directions: |
From Route 1 follow the signs into Victoria. The village is small so 22 Howard is easy to find. |
