Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
It gladdens my heart to find an exceptional bed and breakfast in a totally unexpected spot; in this case not five minutes north of Highway 401 near Kingston. Tree Lane Country House Bed and Breakfast, tucked away in Wilton village, is just such a place. Though this bed and breakfast clearly makes for a convenient stopover between Montreal and Toronto, you could well consider booking a couple of nights. If not, you may be disappointed that you didn’t get to do everything of interest. And that’s because host (and avid model train purveyor) John Licharson has put together an informative booklet which includes mini reviews of restaurants (including Kingston and Napanee) and other attractions in this area of quiet winding roads and country villages. Whether you’re a golfer, hiker, biker, antiquer, auction-lover or back roads adventurer you’ll be agog at what’s on offer.
Wilton is in United Empire Loyalist country and chock full of history. For example Sir John A. MacDonald’s secretary lived here with her husband in one of the area’s notable historic homes. Also notable is the 1836 Regency-style limestone home that John and wife Elna have restored and updated as a bed and breakfast with gracious principal rooms and a wide verandah for use by their guests.
Upstairs, the two queen-bedded guestrooms have skylights, painted wood floors and a fresh white and blue. ‘new country’ décor. It’s all in simple, understated good taste. Both rooms are equally alluring and have captivating views of gardens, meadows and rolling hills. The Five Daughters Room is the smaller of the two but still a good size. The larger Captain’s Room has a nautical theme with wide blue-and-white stripes on painted floors and the occasional oriental carpet. There’s also a double futon in this room, which can accommodate additional guests for $25 each. Both rooms have a fireplace and lounge area with excellent reading lights. Pick a CD and book from your room’s mini-library and kick back.
For the travel-weary there’s a welcome tea or sherry on arrival and, if you really want to retreat from the world, Elna will prepare dinner for $35 per person with advance notice. Here’s a sample menu: artichoke quiche as a starter, then piquant scallops over rice with green beans accompanied by parmesan bread and green salad. A white chocolate mousse provides a suitable finish.
Next morning you’ll take breakfast in the formal dining room. Elna’s breakfast varies – perhaps you’ll have fresh pineapple with blackberries, sour cream biscuits with preserves and a main course such as avocado and Boursin omelette with Canadian bacon. After, take your second cup of coffee out to the verandah and dream of another time as you gaze across to horses grazing in the fields. Guaranteed you’ll have a new lease on life.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting John and Elna know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
