Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

There’s a main level room at Tranquil Woods Bed and Breakfast near Huntsville that spoke to my heart. The theme of the Whispering Pines Room is French country with a modern twist. Hosts Judy and Dan Evans joined forces to put together this perfectly lovely room with its realistic electric fireplace and black-and-white toile on a king size bed. (The beds can also be made up as two twins if you like.) Dan built the headboard and selected and installed the black and white flower photos above it. Its bathroom is en suite and the room has its own private main floor entrance deck at the back of the house. Or you can enter via the front door. From the foyer, simply turn right into a cosy white-furnished sitting room and then beyond to the guest bedroom.

When I stayed that room was taken so I didn’t even know what I was missing. I only saw it next morning after the other guests departed. I’d been perfectly happy with the queen-bedded Red Oak Room on the second floor, done in rich satins and brocades. The colours run to deep reds and taupe with touches of pewter and gold. The en suite bathroom is done in similar hues. A second bedroom, further along the hall, has a casual light country feel with sloped ceilings. It also has an en suite bathroom.

Judy’s bubbly personality and Dan’s agreeable nature make a perfect combination and you’ll feel like you’re visiting favorite family members who happen to live in Huntsville. Guests have use of the living room with vaulted ceiling with cosiness provided by an 1880s Victorian mantle. You'll also have use of the wrap-around verandah and a Muskoka Room that backs onto woods.

Next morning, you’ll have breakfast in the large dining room. There are all the usual selections: fruit, toast, muffins juices, cold cereals plus hot if you like. Judy is enthusiastically building up her breakfast recipe collection. I lapped up a delicious puffy baked apple omelette the likes of which I’d never had before. It was served with a surprisingly tasty turkey ‘bacon’. Your fruit course might be a fruit dish like baked caramel pears followed by a main entrée like banana orange French toast.

This beautiful newly-built home sitting on a gentle slope and surrounded by woods and Muskoka rock makes for a great destination. It’s three minutes from Deerhurst and Grandview. A minute longer takes you to Hidden Valley Ski Resort. Ten or 15 minutes takes you to Huntsville town centre, Pioneer Village, Arrowhead Park or Dwight Beach. In half an hour you can be at the Dorset Tower or even Ontario’s Mecca for nature-lovers, Algonquin Park.
