Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend in Rossport on Lake Superior which is two hours southeast of Thunder Bay. Janette Higgins

Many of us make delightful Rossport a one-night stopover on the way between Sault Ste Marie and Thunder Bay. But why not stay a couple of nights. Rossport is just a couple of hours southeast of Thunder Bay just off the TransCanada highway. Nestled on the shore with stunning views of islands complete with a lighthouse this little outport was historically a destination for tourists from the south because the train stopped there and left them for a week at a time or even the whole summer.

Whether you arrange for a nature tour through The Willows Inn Bed and Breakfast hosts, Dawn King and Robert Muller, set out in your own kayak or take a hike to examine the cliffs which expose millenia of rock strata you’ll be kept happily occupied during your sojourn. As for dinner you’re in luck. In tourist season there are two very good restaurants in this town of 100 or so souls. The bonus is that one stays open year round though you should check for days closed if you’re there mid-week. Even then you’re in luck – Dawn and Robert can come up with dinner on fairly short notice, so that's another option.

Now for the facilities at The Willows Inn Bed and Breakfast. The second time I stayed (in 2007) was to a re-inspection because it has been sold to new owners. Dawn and Robert had moved from Vancouver, British Columbia to take over the bed and breakfast from previous long-time owners. As is usual when I do my B&B research I used a pseudonym so when I stayed they had no idea it was me until after breakfast. Back then Dawn and Robert were in the process of freshening everything up. The downstairs common area had been painted a soft shell pink and when I checked recently (early 2009)there was only one bedroom left to be painted.

All the bed & breakfast guestrooms have sitting areas, wireless internet, en suite bathrooms and armoires containing TV and VCR, plus extras like hair dryers. The Wilson Room is the largest with freestanding gas fireplace, queen-size bed, whirlpool tub and separate shower. This room’s sitting area has large windows overlooking the scenic harbour which comes complete with a flashing lighthouse. The Copper Room also overlooks the water and has a queen bed with floral duvets, plus a desk. Another, the Quarry Room, has twin beds (or king; let them know when you book) and is the only one without a harbour view. These are all on the second floor. On the first, the Salter Room is decorated around a fishing theme. Perfect for business travellers, it has a desk and phone, plus fax and of course wireless internet. For guests without their own laptop a computer is available in the common area.

Even though I only stayed one night I left with many a memory. The delicious breakfast which involved Dawn’s Rossport eggs, a tasty scrambled egg concoction on toasted English muffins. Even the several trains I heard passing through in the night lent an otherworldly feel to this magical little corner of the earth.
