Upon arrival at The Doctor’s Inn Bed and Breakfast you’ll soon see why Owen Sound’s first doctor built this grand 26-room home here in 1874 – the views of undulating countryside would be reason enough but the property also has the unique distinction of containing five large springfed ponds, all visible from the dwelling, now used by guests for swimming and fishing.
I was greeted at the front door by host Laurie Vervaeke’s friendly smile and two engaging children, James and Cassandra. Husband Steven was off working at the time but I met him later and he’s no less personable. Laurie led me through the dining room and large renovated kitchen into the guest area. Here there’s a lounge with TV, VCR, kettle, microwave and bar fridge stocked with milk, cream and juice. As well Laurie keeps fresh fruit and home baking out for guests.
The guestrooms are located along a hall on the other side of the lounge. The Carolyn Room is decorated in coordinating Sanderson fabrics and has its own private en suite bathroom. The Gemma and Wendy Rooms also have en suite bathrooms. Attractive décor, comfortable seating, good reading lights and polished hardwood floors are all part of the package. You may also enter the Gemma and Wendy rooms directly from the outside through French doors. As well guests have access in and out of the bed and breakfast lounge area from the back deck.
Laurie loves to bake so you’ll be treated to something mouth-watering at breakfast. Perhaps spinach frittata, baked apple pancake made with local Georgian Bay apples, or Belgian waffles with whipped cream, fresh fruit and warm maple syrup.
