Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
It turns out that Dianne and Kent Chisholm are long-time fans of my bed and breakfast guides. Having read my reviews and stayed at so many of my picks, they are well aware of what I look for. And, indeed, as I looked around their place, I saw all the hallmarks of an especially attractive, well run B&B, perfect for visitors to Stratford. Confident I’d found a ‘good one’ I dropped my subterfuge and introduced myself. That’s when I found out the Chisholms had been using my recommendations since I brought out my first guide way back in 1988.
Located on the main street and within a few minutes walk of downtown, theatres and the lake, guests never have to use their car after they check in at this bed and breakfast. You’ll have use of the wide verandah and a comfortable common area on the main floor. Upstairs, the three rooms are all perfectly turned out. In fact, theirs was the designer house for the Lung Association in 2000. Eight designers each took a room and the Chisholms have kept most of the decorating.
Upstairs, the earth-toned English Room features a four-poster queen-size bed, comfortable sitting area and remote electric fireplace for romantic ambiance. The elegant slipper-back tub invites relaxation while the walk-in shower offers spritzing on the hoof. The Red Room has a four-poster queen bed and corner fireplace. Deep reds in the drapes and designer bedspread add warmth and comfort. The intriguing walk-in shower with clear glass panels has no curtains or door. The last room, with twin beds, is called A Touch of Asia because of the screen and oriental wall panels complementing the dark wood of the antique Eastlake furniture. Its bathroom has a striking square pedestal sink and an acrylic shower unit with built-in seat. Each guestroom has central air, coffee maker and a bar fridge with milk for tea, cream for coffee and complimentary soft drinks. There’s also a clamp-on LED book light in each room which readers appreciate and wireless access for laptops throughout the house.
Next morning, you may think the theatre's about to start when you hear the ‘Festival Trumpeters’ -- but, no, they're simply announcing breakfast! The fruit course may be broiled grapefruit or poached pears served with an assortment of fresh baking. The hot dish might be brunch egg bake with peameal bacon, baked egg cups with rosemary ham, or crustless tomato quiche with maple sausage. Not surprisingly, the Chisholms go out of their way to accommodate special dietary needs. Just let them know in advance.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Dianne and Kent know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
