Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

Early Canadian Loyalist in style, at first glance this bed and breakfast can easily fool you into thinking it’s nineteenth century. With so many houses being built in Niagara-on-the-Lake for bed & breakfast, and looking new, I appreciated the attention to detail in this reproduction. The owners had obviously managed to save many of the trees and the site was well chosen. The signs were all good.

Upon being greeted at the door by the personable host Gloria Grieve and in glancing around at the interesting Canadian art collection, I was certain I was onto a good thing. To your left is a comfy-cozy library for guests and to your right, the dining area. Gloria and husband, Jim, designed their own quarters at the back of the house. Turns out they’d retired (she was a physiotherapist, he a realtor) and built this house in 1995 to run as a bed and breakfast. Sadly, Jim has passed on but Gloria has continued the B&B and thrives on looking after her bed and breakfast guests.

Upstairs, there’s a spacious skylit landing containing large pieces of contemporary art. Nearby, you’ll find the three attractive guest bedrooms all with reading lights. The largest has a queen-size bed and bathroom with shower and tub. A second queen room is a bit smaller and has a large shower. It was my favourite for its blue-and-cream décor. And I was delighted to see the third bedroom has twin beds (there’s a shower/tub combo here) because many newer bed and breakfast hosts don’t offer this option. Those that do tell me it makes a lot of sense – there are many travelling duos who prefer separate beds.

Next morning, at breakfast Gloria offers an abundance of local and imported fruit, fresh-ground Brazilian coffee and a hot entrée of some sort such as crustless quiche with peameal (Canadian) bacon. After, there’s no shortage of diversion in Niagara-on-the-Lake. And if you just want to spoil yourself, ask Gloria about the spa privileges her guests have at the Pillar and Post.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Gloria know you read my review of her bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
