Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts, Gaetan and Louise, know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins

Riviere du Loup is a great stopover on your way to or from the Maritimes but adjacent Portage is also well-known as a place to get away. Auberge la Sabline bed and breakfast is on the edge of Portage. Some of Canada'a illustrious 19th century politicos maintained summer homes nearby. Think Sir John A Macdonald next door and Louis St. Laurent across the road. This section of the St Lawrence is particularly scenic in either direction and highly recommended for more than one night.

Auberge du Sabline was built by a wealthy fur baron and now the grand old house is a bed and breakfast run by Gaeton and his partner Louise. Gaetan is the main host since Louise is teaching school. Gaetan speaks English having lived abroad in places like New Zealand, Australia and Japan. The rooms are large and done in a neutral decor. Most areas are carpeted and there's a shoes-off policy with knit 'slippers' at the door. (My friend was so enamoured of them she contacted Gaetan later for the source. Turns out it was his grandmother who knit them.)

The B&B is just down the road from a couple of the region's famous resorts where you can have dinner in the old French style. We ate at the Portage Inn overlooking the sun setting on the St Lawrence. The chef graciously split the Table d'Hote for my friend and myself. Both portions were beautifully presented and we ended up communicating in lively Spanish with our friendly waiter. Dinner included snails in a cream sauce, pork tenderloin in another tasty sauce and vegetables. Fruit pie topped it off. It was a perfect night.

Next morning Gaetan served up breakfast. Fruit was available to start; pineapple, citrus, kiwi, grapes and banana. Then he brought crepes with a pot of vanilla yogurt. The sideboard contained cereals, excellent jams and such. When it came time for goodbyes I commented on how everything was so well maintained, including the exceptional hanging planters out front, but it seemed the slope-floored porch needed some shoring up. Or at least so I thought. Turns out it was purpose-built this way to shed rain! Indeed the house is designated historic by Patrimoine Canada.
