An old family home is now a busy bed and breakfast;. Busy because North Sydney is the jumping-off point for the ferry to Newfoundland. So book early.

Six editions of the book were published to critical and popular acclaim. Janette now publishes her B&B reviews and holiday reports online.
Cheryl Chambers once ran a flower shop in this, her family home, but now she's switched to running a bed and breakfast. And, boy, is it a busy spot. Naturally, it's called Chambers Guest House and it's a fine place to stay in Port Sydney. First, there's Cheryl herself. A friendly local who's genuinely attentive to her guests' needs. Then there is the spirit of the old house which evokes a different time. As Cheryl says, this bed and breakfast is part of her history. And she loves to share it.

As for the rooms, we needed one with two beds. I had called a month in advance. The large room I preferred had a separate sitting porch and en suite bath but it had been reserved months before. Business is booming in the summer months because of the ferry to and from Newfoundland so it's wise to book early. We ended up in a small room adjacent to a bathroom shared with another larger room down the hall.

For dinner in Port Sydney there are a couple of good choices. We'd heard about the Black Spoon Restaurant but when the ever-helpful Cheryl phoned to make a reservation we were too late. On our way to eat elsewhere we did walk by the Black Spoon and ran into fellow guests who said they'd had an excellent dinner. Instead we ate at the Waterside where I had a maple salmon with fresh perfectly cooked baby corn, asparagus and broccolini. Plus a delicious rissotto. All for $16.00. Pretty impressive.

Next morning for breakfast Cheryl, and her mother who comes over to help, put out a generous continental breakfast buffet on an antique sideboard. We enjoyed fresh fruit, soft boiled eggs, and some of the baking. There was an ample selection of cereals, jams yogurts, breads, muffins, bagels. Most baking was store bought but there were some home made treasures in their midst.

As we were checking out (cash only, please) I enquired after a photo of a giantess on the wall. I recalled there was a novel written about such a person from Nova Scotia. Turns out the novel was based on the life of the person in the photo, Anna Swan. And that she was a relative of Cheryl's.
