Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
Hosts Dwight Crandall and Barbara Kordich once had a bed and breakfast in Victoria, British Columbia. Now they've set up shop in Gagetown, New Brunswick. The story of how they came to be in Gagetown is improbable but intriguing. It has to do with serendipity and an inadvertent Facebook connection. Dwight and Barbara are about the friendliest, most entertaining hosts I've come across. It would be hard to top their fascinating ghost story (Victoria) and other scintillating bits that kept cropping up in our lively conversations. Don't get me wrong. They didn't hog the conversation; it's just they were so much fun to talk to.
We'd picked Gagetown because of its proximity to Fredericton and were planning to go for dinner there until Barbara pointed out that the Creek View Restaurant a couple of blocks away was pretty good. She was right. We thoroughly enjoyed our perfectly cooked fish dish with fresh tomato sauce. As for the accompanying homemade biscuits we ended up craving them the rest of the trip.
Gagetown is a sleepy little community on the St. John River laid out as it would have been in the 19th century; a large grid of streets seemingly prepared for many more homes to be built than there are. Now it's a mix of locals and laid-back artsy types and is a relaxing place to walk about and explore. Nearby is one of the many small boats that will ferry your car across the St. John River. In this unique fashion you can zig zag your way all the way down the scenic river to New Brunswick's capital, St John.
Dwight and Barbara were still renovating when we stayed, and breakfast was buffet-style downstairs, but now the two en suite rooms are finished complete with mini-fridge, microwave, coffee press & tea pot, dishes & cutlery and a small pantry with fruit, yogurt, cereals, bread, coffee, tea, milk, cream & juices. The hosts suggest the Creekview if you'd like a cooked breakfast but I suspect most are happy to opt for the generous choice available in their room. They've covered all the bases.
