Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
As you pull into the brick-paved parking area at Little Lake Inn bed and breakfast in Midland you’ll notice what looks like a well-landscaped bungalow with a new dormer and wrap-around verandah. When I arrived for the first time I was welcomed by the then young (and now college-age) self-assured son, Brett who showed me around. You couldn't ask for more amenities (see sidebar for the full list). For example, all of the bed and breakfast rooms have fireplaces, bar fridges, queen size beds and double whirlpool tubs in en suite bathrooms. As well each room offers a full assortment of electronics for movies and music and business travellers to Midland will appreciate all the essential hook-ups including wireless high-speed internet.
The first two B&B rooms, just inside the front door, were very nicely decorated. One, on the left, is called the Rose Suite. It has a love seat and its own entrance through garden doors. The Green Room has a love seat and garden doors leading to a private seating area on the verandah. Then Brett led me to the rest of the house. Well!
Turns out the back half was originally a commercial building that got moved here from downtown Midland, high ceilings and all. So the B&B guest lounge with 11-foot beamed ceiling and the two back bedrooms are in marked contrast to the front. One is the Blue Room with wicker loveseat and mirrored bathroom. The other is the sunny Yellow Room with pull-out sofa and its own exit to the back deck. The hardwood floors and trim are original and large new windows offer views of Midland's Little Lake surrounded by parkland.
Next morning hosts Jennifer Hart, and Milton Haynes (if he’s not off to his real estate job), serve breakfast by yet another fireplace. Juice, fresh fruit (or perhaps baked apples or poached pears), home baked scones or muffins and a choice of several cereals start you off right. The main dish might be orange waffles, cheesy egg bake or apple/molasses pancakes. After, there’s enough to keep everyone occupied for several days in Midland what with theatre, the Martyrs’ Shrine, Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, Discovery Harbour, 30,000 island boat cruise and the like. Or you can walk to Huron Indian Village and the Huronia Museum, right from your hosts’ back door.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
