Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
Blue Forest Lane Bed and Breakfast was our pick for a two night stay 'in Halifax'. Well, not quite. We hadn't figured on it being 20-25 minutes, partly by highway, away from downtown Halifax but it worked out nonetheless. Turns out this B&B is in Hammond's Plain which is probably considered a suburb of Halifax. The bed and breakfast is in a beautiful wooded setting and the house is welcoming and elegant with well-maintained grounds.
Brent and Wanda-Lee Kowalczyk are the proprietors of this bed and breakfast with Brent as the primary host. Wanda-Lee is the behind-the-scenes baker. As I toured round the home I noticed little paintings I recognized. Turns out Wanda-Lee is an artist whose charming miniature prints I'd bought for a retail shop I once owned in Ontario.
We stayed in the Cottage Room which has a queen and a twin bed. The room was beautiful with lots of windows and both it and the bathroom were a nice size. We were not cramped for space here! And it turned out we didn't miss downtown Halifax restaurants. The first night Brent had steered us towards a Greek restaurant about ten minutes away. It was so good we went back the second night. Lively ambiance, good service and interesting choices on the menu. Good spot.
Breakfast both mornings was taken in the dining room with our chatty host providing stories and commentary. One morning we had fresh fruit sprinkled with homemade granola crunch and yogurt. Then we had creamy scrambled eggs with a croissant, sauce hollandaise and a small piece of ham. About the right portion size for us; those with heartier appetites might wish to ask for a bit of a top-up. I'm sure Brent would be amenable.
