Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
Eighteen Waterloo bed and breakfast has a great location just a couple of blocks from downtown and a few blocks from the Festival Theatre. It also has a couple of hosts, Christopher and Christie Mee, who run a first-rate bed and breakfast. Christie's still working as a medical technologist and Christopher, formerly a medical school administrator, now a chef, runs the bed and breakfast.
This man loves to cook so if you love to eat this spot's for you. Christopher will provide a traditional breakfast. But if I were you I'd opt for whatever entrée is on the menu. Examples: He does a BLT like you've never had before --pancetta, oven-roasted roma tomatoes and aioli on sun-dried tomato bread with locally grown 'soiled reputations' baby greens. Or how about his frittata with Norwegian smoked salmon, Haas avocado, baby scallions and two-year old cheddar served with potatoes Anna and the same bad boy salad. Weekends, Christie gets in on the act. Her specialty is baked eggs on a bed of greens and cheese atop a seasonal vegetable served with ratatouille and sausage medallions. During my stay I had the Tijuana Sunrise breakfast consisting of organic eggs with a mild salsa and baby spinach with grated Monterey Jack cheese on a tortilla accompanied by a guacamole-filled tomato half. Whew!
The B&B rooms are pretty nifty, too. Oriental carpets on polished maple floors and original Canadian art set the scene. And all have niceties like LCD HD TVs and wireless internet access. On the second floor the smaller Parsley and Sage Rooms have queen beds and en suite bathrooms. The Parsley Room has its vanity in the bedroom and a large balcony. The Rosemary Suite has two bedrooms; the larger has a queen bed and the other a twin size. There's a soaker tub and shower in its large en suite bathroom. A door leads to a newly-renovated balcony overlooking the Avon River. Up another flight, on the third floor, the Thyme Room is a huge loft for bed and breakfast guests with a king and a twin bed and a full bathroom. There are lots of little surprise extras in each room as well -- all very well thought out.
And you might want to consider Eighteen Waterloo bed & breakfast in Stratford's off-season too when the Mees offer their winter escape package which includes a three course gourmet dinner, though you can enquire about the dinner for other times as well as long as you give at least 24 hours advance notice. It includes an amuse en bouche, baguette, choice of apetizer, entree and dessert, coffee and tea. It's $45 per person plus taxes and 20% gratuity.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Chris and Christie know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
