Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
Eastlake House Bed and Breakfast hosts, John Cook and Julie Robinson, have set out to provide an exceptional Prince Edward County bed and breakfast experience. There’s the warm, decorous welcome, a gracious home that’s tastefully decorated and an imaginative breakfast. Then there are the extras such as evening sherry; coffee and tea service on antique silver anytime before breakfast; or breakfast on the sunporch if you like.
Eastlake House Bed and Breakfast is situated a couple of blocks north of the bustle of Picton’s main street and it has an interesting architectural history. It’s a classic 1907 Edwardian with bricks made of Sandbanks sand and an historical designation to protect its integrity. Guest common areas include a side patio, screened-in porch and, inside two comfortable sitting areas that can be separated by pocket doors if other guests are watching TV in the less formal of the two rooms.
Upstairs, the three bed and breakfast guestrooms all have en suite bathrooms and are decorated in muted tones of cream, gold, and green accented by creamy coral or café-au-lait. Silk moire or antique lace accent the windows. Wool oriental rugs grace the floors and antique Eastlake furniture can be found throughout. The queen-size beds have new mattresses, goose down duvets and cotton blankets. (I get het up –pun intended – about quilts/duvets but no light blanket on B&B beds in summer.)
The spacious Cameo Room is unique because of its ornate Victorian headboard and a striking oval leaded glass window which measures five feet high. The room also has three upholstered chairs and reading lamps. Its huge en suite bathroom has modern facilities coupled with an antique tub and shower. The Courtyard Room, with large private balcony, sports the clean lines of mission oak furniture. Again three chairs and reading lamps beside the bed. The en suite bathroom has a shower stall as does the smaller Chantilly Room.
As a former public health nurse Julie can accommodate special diets of all sorts but she also accommodates, very well, those of us who just want to indulge. Here’s a sample offering showcasing the bounty of Prince Edward County. You could start with a mimosa (OJ and County cider), then on to a fresh fruit course with homemade scones or muffins. Follow that up with citrus French toast and County peameal bacon or, perhaps, Gruyere tarts with rosemary lamb sausage again from Prince Edward County.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Julie and John know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
