I experienced a first at Cuernavaca’s Villa San Marcos bed and breakfast. I cried when I left! In my 17 years of bed and breakfast research I’ve stayed at hundreds of bed and breakfasts so was taken by surprise at my reaction. But Marta Elena de la Fuente, the funny, warm, exuberant Mexican host, had that effect on me. We may have lived completely different lives in completely different countries but she made me feel like family.
Besides a host with personality plus and beautiful gardens, Mexico's Villa San Marcos Bed and Breakfast offers gracious principal rooms and four airy guest rooms, each with private bath. It’s not surprising to learn that it was originally built for a Contessa. The rooms are decorated in a pleasing mix of contemporary Mexican art and Guatemalan textiles. Also displayed is the talented Marta Elena’s own colourful fabric art. The two largest and most luxurious bedrooms have sitting areas and views over the back courtyard. One has a king size bed, the other a queen. My room was large and faced the small courtyard at the front of the house. Its bed was queen size and though it had no official sitting area it had two large upholstered stools that I found very useful. The fourth smaller room also faces the back courtyard. Two smaller rooms are available for Spanish language and other students visiting Mexico.
Normally, I’m not too entranced by dogs who hang out a lot with hosts of bed and breakfasts. But Peggy, Marta Elena’s personable pug, was an exception. If you’d prefer not to see so much of the darling Peggy, Marta Elena can keep her somewhat at bay. And though Marta Elena is a smoker that didn’t bother me either. She’s very discreet.
Much of my time at Mexico's Villa San Marcos bed and breakfast was spent relaxing in the courtyard. It has several seating and eating areas and intoxicating gardens. Marta Elena loves to putter with plants and she proudly showed me a tiny pineapple beginning to develop in one of her many planters. She has ripped out the farthest corner of the garden, reducing the symmetry, but that’s because she's put in a kitchen garden. She loves to cook so that can only bode well for her bed and breakfast guests. My breakfasts over the 7 days varied. Most were inspired by the cuisine of Mexico but one day it was pancakes. All was delicious.
This Mexican bed and breakfast’s central Cuernavaca location makes it a great spot for tourists, golfers, business people and those who wish to brush up on their Spanish at one of Cuernavaca’s many Spanish language schools. In fact that’s the reason I was in Mexico. (See my review of Cuernavaca's Encuentros Spanish Language School.)
Even if you don’t speak Spanish you won’t have any trouble communicating – though born in Mexico, B&B host Marta Elena is fluent in French and English picked up during extended stays in France and California.
Note to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Marta Elena know you read my review of her bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
