Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

Passion, perseverance and preservation. That’s the story of this architecturally noteworthy Ottawa Valley home, which was destroyed by fire in 1999. In 2001 bed and breakfast hosts, Sherri and Brian Lillico, purchased the stone shell of Clyde Hall, which sits on ten scenic acres in Lanark village near Perth. With vision and determination they set to work on creating a first-rate bed and breakfast.

As you drive along the winding lane towards this bed and breakfast you’ll feel as if you’re arriving at a country estate. But it’s an estate without pretensions (and gardens still in progress). Sherri and Brian’s warm welcome will have you thinking of this place as home in no time. As you stand in the spacious main floor foyer and look around you’ll see the solarium with its heated floor, a drawing room furnished with a baby grand piano and a great room with wood-burning fireplace. All for you to enjoy.

Ascend the grand staircase, and on the second floor you’ll find two spacious guestrooms with en suite bathrooms. The Caldwell Room, named after the original owner, has a walk-in shower stall and Jacuzzi. The McMullen has a soaker tub with shower. The third floor rooms, the Green, Yellow and Red, share a large spa-style bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and shower. (There’s also an extra powder room on the main floor.) All rooms have queen-size beds and are beautifully furnished. (Besides bed and breakfast, the Lillicos host weddings, corporate retreats and the like. If you’re interested in booking the whole house they do have another room or two on tap.)

Breakfast next morning is usually served to bed and breakfast guests in the ornate dining room with Tiffany style lighting. You’ll have orange juice and fresh fruit salad followed by something like homemade waffles with strawberries and blueberries topped with whipped cream and, on the side, lashings of maple syrup glazed bacon.

And you won’t be stuck for something to do after. Nearby are golf, fishing, boating and cross-country skiing. A bit further afield will take you to dog sledding, horseback riding and, for chocoholics, the Hershey Factory. There's also the Art of being Green Festival in July and October's Scarlet Maple Tour which features heritage buildings and unique businesses in the area. Perhaps the most unique Lanark offering is a June festival celebrating the area’s 16,000 wild orchids.

By the way, here is no ‘fine dining’ in Lanark village but Perth (15 minute drive) has a good selection.
