Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
As soon as I walked in, I knew I’d like this Bayfield bed and breakfast – not only from the quick glance around, but from host Clair Soper’s reception. She greeted me like an old friend; and, as it turned out we had something in common. We’d both left well-paying jobs to do something completely different in small historic communities. And we’d both bought century cottages that needed lots of work. In Clair’s case, she left teaching (Latin and French) to move to Bayfield to run a bed and breakfast on the shores of Lake Huron where she’d summered with her family as a child.
Clair’s one-and-a-half storey yellow brick farmhouse, built in 1857, faces the Bayfield village common. Inside, the pine and ash floors are returned to their original condition and there’s original art on the walls and antiques throughout, including a fine Scottish flame-birch armoire. Upstairs the sloped-ceiling bed and breakfast bedrooms are charmingly cottage-like. All three have queen beds and one also has a single. The Town Hall Room has pretty comforters and a full bath en suite. The Garden Room is at the back of the house and has a view over the gardens and its recently-renovated en suite bathroom has a shower only. The Park Room is a reno of two smaller rooms so it’s a good size. The bathroom’s across the hall.
For breakfast, there’s usually fresh fruit and some variation on an egg dish, along with homemade scones. If the weather cooperates you’ll have it on the large deck stylishly furnished with rustic twig furniture. In the background you’ll hear the soothing sound of water trickling in the pond. You may even catch sight of few sheets flapping in the breeze – Clair line-dries her linens for that incomparable outdoorsy scent. After, you can tour the garden. Perhaps go next door to check out the full-service spa. Or, if you like, Clair will lend you her bicycles for a tour of this picturesque cottage community full of interesting shops and good restaurants. A bit further afield is the acclaimed Blyth Theatre which specializes in Ontario's stories.
