Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
A soft snow drifted down as I drove up to Caron House bed and breakfast one evening. To my surprise each window had a candle in it. This attention to nice touches is what makes Caron House Bed and Breakfast so special. Host Mary Caron has an unerring sense of design, colour and what works. Wallpapers from New York, Laura Ashley fabrics and an outstanding selection of antiques all combine beautifully.
Mary grew up in Williamstown, a village that's now a couple of centuries old. As a little girl she would visit the woman who lived in the house and sit by the fire and dream that it was her own. Years later her dream came true. The Carons bought this Georgian house which remains structurally unchanged from when it was built in 1837. The parlours still have their tin ceilings, and the windows, their original inside shutters.
I was the only bed and breakfast guest so had my choice of the two smallish bedrooms. Hard decision, this. Both are decorated in country farmhouse style with Laura Ashley wallpapers and hooked scatter rugs on painted pine floors. I could just as easily have gone for the yellow room, but settled on the pink-and-white one with iron double bed covered with antique linens and handmade quilts. I was charmed to know that this room had once combined with the large bathroom next door to make a ballroom. People arrived by carriage on Saturday nights for dances and music-making. I also like the fact that duos who each want their own bed can do one better and actually have their own room for a reasonable $50 each. And if you're a couple who only want one room but prefer your privacy you can book it as private for $85 as long as no one else has reserved.
As for breakfast next morning, this is a place where, when they say 'gourmet' it's not just an ad, there's substance behind it. Served by candlelight, my breakfast was pineapple banana frappé, and a special French toast with almonds and honey-orange sauce served on Royal Doulton china and Waterford crystal, while a Strauss waltz played in the background the other.
After breakfast, I have no doubt you'll want to pause awhile in the Caron's garden if you're there during summer. They've lavished the same attention on it as on the rest of their charming bed and breakfast.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Mary and Michael know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
