Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
Danielle Paterson left a demanding Toronto medical career to head north to Wiarton where she took over an existing bed and breakfast. She’s now completed the refreshing makeover and this is the Wiarton B&B I recommend if you want to be in town. There’s only one caveat – there’s not even one room with an en suite bathroom as is usual with my picks. That’s because, in Wiarton itself, there’s no such thing. So this bed and breakfast offers the next best – three of the four rooms have private-use bathrooms down the hall. Whoever’s last to book shares the host’s bathroom on the main floor at the foot of the stairs.
All the rooms have appeal. Those looking for a king-size bed should book the Kasbah with its wing-style loveseat. The Forest Glade has twins or a king plus an oversize chair. The most-requested room is The Captain’s Room which has a queen-size bed with a pretty blue-and-white colour scheme plus an electric fireplace and private balcony. However, if proximity to the bathroom is your highest priority then I suggest you book The Jewel, a queen-bedded room done in gold, green and pink. It has a satin-covered loveseat and chair as well as an electric fireplace. Plus it’s right next door to the three bathrooms lined up off the back hall.
And here’s another consideration. If you’re hikers you might want to stake a claim on the bathroom with Jacuzzi tub since the others are all 3 piece. They do have invigorating showers, though, which is not so usual at B&Bs these days what with water-saving shower heads. In fact, Danielle who hates wimpy showers, actually had the flow increased by increasing to 1 inch pipe during the renovations. All guest bedrooms have robes and slippers for padding back and forth.
To back up a bit; on arrival you'll notice the attractive gardens and beckoning old-fashioned verandah. Danielle is proud of the fact that, in 2008, Gadd-About became the first private home in Wiarton to become designated as a heritage site. Inside, the principal rooms are gussied up with period furniture and candles for ambiance. The parlour has a Persian carpet and original wood-burning fireplace. The adjacent living room is pretty as well. The den with TV, DVD and all the computer accoutrements you could need is thoughtfully provided for for business travellers and others. Pilots, for example, will have access to wireless and a laptop for weather and flight planning. For more information, pilots should click on the "Pilot Friendly" button on Danielle's website (see below). Danielle also welcomes hikers and bike riders. She caters to Bruce Trail hikers with lunches and drop-offs and bikers are offered tarps to cover their bikes and provided with lemon Glade for their windscreens.
As for breakfast Danielle is up early – coffee and mini-muffins await on the upstairs landing at 7 AM and she’s flexible about breakfast times. Typically it starts with juice and fruit; fresh in summer and compotes in winter. Then on to muffins or a coconut loaf followed by a main course. I had a deliciously eggy apple pancake with bacon. Yours might be scrambled eggs with fresh parmesan and herbed tomatoes accompanied by steak sausage. Homemade bread/toast and cereals are also available.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Danielle know you read my review. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
