Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
And now for something completely different. Bay View Bed and Breakfast, located five minutes east of Wiarton near the Bruce Peninsula, reflects the vision of Jennifer and Jim Clement. They had lived in Toronto and Kitchener, she a para-legal and he a contractor, but yearned for the country. They had weekended in the area and it just got harder and harder to leave come Sunday night. Now they don’t have to leave.
What’s different at Bay View Bed and Breakfast is that the three guestrooms are in a separate unit near the main house. From the outside I was reminded of a bunkhouse for ranch hands. Well, not quite. Turns out the Clements completely renovated the building for bed and breakfast. All is new and the rooms will appeal to those who like their privacy. Also to those who like a large TV/VCR/DVD player. And a gas fireplace. Oh, and a Jacuzzi tub in the room… I can see you’re getting the picture. Jennifer even has movies available and provides a categorized list of more than 2000(!) she owns. The rooms have French doors onto a long narrow deck which connects all three.
Each room has a theme and Jennifer had fun in her pursuit of just the right decorative pieces. The Oriental Room has a large fan on the wall and Eastern motif on the bed linens. The Nautical Room is anchored (sorry!) by a hand-made quilt with a maritime scene. These both have queen size beds. The Western Room is larger and has a king size bed covered with faux animal hides. Each of the en suite bathrooms has a shower stall (not always available with a Jacuzzi, but appreciated) plus a small fridge.
All is kept clean and neat, even the kitchen; a good thing because guests have view of it when they’re in the main house. There’s also a large window-walled hot tub room and, out of view behind the bunkie, an above ground pool. The nicely decorated guest living room is used in cooler weather but most guests, on summer nights, find themselves sitting around the bonfire looking out over Colpoy Bay. The sociable Clements love to join their guests and have been known to be up until 2 am with them. Yet the energetic, multi-tasking Jennifer still manages to be up early making breakfast for the ‘hands’.
This is the perfect bed and breakfast for those who don’t typically choose bed and breakfast places. Snow-mobilers, boomers on motorcycles, and not a few romantics will be happy here. That’s not to say that anyone wanting to branch out from the traditional wouldn’t have a good time as well.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
