Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
OK, OK. Typical suburban bungalow hiding out behind some pretty big evergreens – really there’s not much to hint that, inside, there’s a bed and breakfast that stands apart. First, the short version. Hosts Janet and David Maskery are friendly and outgoing, as is their Westie dog, Dougal. The two cats, Moe and Bubba, are a bit shyer but all may be found at one time or another in the guest common area (but not the bedrooms). For those of you who travel with pets this is one of the few pet-friendly B&Bs in the province so do enquire. An attractive guest-only living room with library and gas fireplace entices you to set a spell and the three bedrooms are comfortable and attractive with ceiling fans, cable TV and wireless internet. Now for the details.
Though not far from Sudbury’s arterial Regent Street, this bed and breakfast is tucked away on a quiet tree-lined crescent. Knock on the door and Janet or David will provide a gracious welcome and you’ll get your first glimpse of good things to come. As you’re led to your room you’ll note that none open onto the common area – something I prefer and which is not often the case in newer homes.
First comes the cheerful red and white Harbour Room with two twin beds which can also be king. Its private-use bath (shower only) is directly across the narrow hall. Next door is the blue-and-yellow Vineyard Room which has a queen size bed and en suite bathroom. The sink is in the room itself -- a handy feature. Both are as pretty as any bed and breakfast rooms you’ll find.
Then comes the piece de resistance. Follow the hall back to the Water Garden Room; so called because of its views of a naturalistic water garden with falls, fish and floating plants. The room itself is done in soothing shades of lilac and cream. There’s a four-poster queen size bed, en suite bathroom with a jet tub with shower, and a lounge chair with footstool beside an inviting gas fireplace. A separate sleep nook accommodates a single daybed.
From the dining room there's a walkout to the back yard which offers up a peaceful garden-strewn sanctuary. There’s a shaded swing by the pond for a quiet read, a lounge with fire pit for night-time chats, a screened-in gazebo by the water garden and a hot tub shaded by a vine-covered pergola.
Breakfast holds to the same high standard. All the usual is on offer including fresh fruit salad, home-baked scones or breads and a hot dish which, besides the more usual waffles or frittata, could be egg enchiladas or Dutch baked apple dumpling. Back bacon or sausage is served on the side. I had a variation on eggs Florentine (poached atop spinach). Then get out and explore all Sudbury and area has on offer—it’s a happening place. But, then, you probably knew that.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
