Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
The address may be Wiarton but Sauble Falls Bed and Breakfast is actually at the quiet, non-commercial north end of Sauble Beach. Initially, I was a bit leery because it seemed to cater to children in July and August and wasn’t certain whether it could also be a good spot for adults sans children. (The rest of the year it’s more adult-oriented and offers hiking trails and 15 kms of groomed cross-country trails from right outside their door where abundant wildlife awaits.) But we loved it. Here’s why.
For starters hosts Gloria and Brian Currie make a great team. Their calm and friendly demeanor sets the tone. They take turns at everything from showing the spotless rooms to making breakfast. And Gloria has a kind but firm way of dealing with the very occasional poorly-parented child. The common area is a comfortable open-concept living room/dining room space with a 2-piece powder room and small kitchen equipped for snack preparation. You’ll also find a large assortment of books, games and music.
I was captivated by the number of birds I saw outside the large windows within minutes of my arrival – cardinals, grosbeaks, goldfinches, woodpeckers and more. And also by the origami elephant crafted from a map. Turns out it was sent to Gloria and Brian by an Alberta boy whose family used the map during their tour of Ontario. Clearly, Sauble Falls Bed and Breakfast was a highlight of his trip.
The four spotless newly-carpeted bedrooms are lined up along a long narrow hall on the second floor. All look out over the large furnished back decks and pathways leading down to the picturesque Sauble River. Two rooms have queen beds – the charming red and white Country Garden Room and the Canadiana-themed River Room. The other two rooms have good set ups for families. The Woodland Room has two double beds and the largest, the nautically-themed Lighthouse Room, has a double bed plus two twins. All have ceiling fans, pine wainscotting, baseboard heaters and shower stalls in en suite bathrooms which feature heated ceramic tile floors. Something else I liked – every summer night the Curries light a bonfire and have marshmallows on hand for roasting.
Next morning for breakfast we had granola and fresh fruit to start, freshly baked muffins, and a square of egg strata with homemade chili sauce. For children there’s an assortment of cereals. After, we made our way down to Brian’s new dock. A cormorant sat glued to a log on the opposite bank, a platoon of ducks made their lazy way up river and kayakers and canoers were setting out after having rented their craft next door to the bed and breakfast. It was a quiet bucolic setting and the perfect start to our day.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Gloria and Brian know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
