Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
Prince Edward County’s Whispering Falls Bed and Breakfast has a great location, though at first glance you may not think so. For starters, it’s not that far from Wellington, Bloomfield, Picton, Trenton or Belleville, yet it’s on a quiet country road where you can enjoy the serenity of the County away from the traffic and tourists. Plus it’s on a bike route and hosts Barbara and Dan Pipher offer a spot to store your 2-wheeler. The Piphers will even let you in on the nearby North Beach secret; a mini-Sandbanks sans the crowd.
As for the accommodations, you'll find two attractive freshly-renovated bedroom upstairs complete with satellite TV, air conditioning and new 3 piece en suite bathrooms. One, the Forest View Room, has a king or two twins. The Garden View Room has a queen sleigh bed. Guests who stay in these rooms have use of the attractively furnished verandah for picnics or a glass of wine before dinner.
If it's available, though, you may want to check out the main floor Marsh Suite in a new addition at the back of this Victorian farmhouse. It has a private entrance and cheery furnished deck (more wine and picnics). The suite's sitting room is done in shades of cream and coral with sage accents. The coral-red queen pullout chesterfield and matching lounge chair face a wall unit housing a small satellite TV. The bedroom has a queen size bed and en suite bathroom.
It's worth noting a few things about the suite. It has its own refreshment area. Radiant heated floors ensure a cosy off-season getaway. And a second door into the bathroom allows for private access by anyone travelling with you using the sitting room’s pullout. Plus the whole suite is designed to be comfortable for those using canes or walkers. It’s instructive to see how a bathroom can look attractive in spite of wide doors, grab bars, lower mirrors and light switches and a large shower stall with seat.
The view through the suite’s wall of windows, and from its deck, is of meadow, marsh and woods; which leads to another plus for this location. Dan has mown paths through the meadow and cut hiking trails through their 17 acres of forested escarpment full of birds and other wildlife. Dan’s a hiker so just ask him to accompany you if you’re up for a trek. Otherwise the odds are you’ll get lost. You won’t get lost though on your way to the impressive 30-foot-wide stepped waterfall meandering down several hundred feet of the escarpment. In summer, there’s no water but the moss-laden rocks are enchanting none-the-less.
Barbara and Dan have yet to renovate their kitchen so for now, from the suite, you’ll come through the their outdated farmhouse kitchen into the attractive dining room for breakfast. (The upstairs rooms enter by way of the Pipher's living room.) I sat down to a generous portion of French toast with bacon accompanied by slices of three different heirloom tomatoes along with homemade sweet breads. And that’s when I heard the story of Collette their miracle cat – do ask!
