Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
To arrive at Maplewood Bed and Breakfast you drive along a winding lane through woods, round a curve and suddently find yourself entering a 30-acre meadow ringed by trees. Plunked in the middle is the bed and breakfast. As I drove towards it I couldn’t help but be reminded of something on the seashore in Brighton, England – large wooden structure and wide veranda complete with turret.
You can bet the story of the house is interesting. Gail and Rob designed (with the help of an architect) and built their home especially for bed and breakfast. The roof, foundation and heating system were contracted out but they did most of the rest. Rob’s the carpenter and he made the extra-wide front door and sidelights out of butternut wood from a neighbour’s property. The same wood is used on the stairs to the second floor where you’ll find a comfy bed and breakfast guest lounge and three large guest bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms.
The largest and most arresting is the high-ceilinged Turret Room. Where the other two have a chair and wooden settee the Turret has a cream-coloured chesterfield and features a Rob-made sleigh bed. There’s also a lovely armoire in here lending character. My favourite of the other two is the one with the black and white toile bed linens though the third is where we stayed and it was perfectly lovely. Rob has plans for building beds for these rooms as well.
A good reason to come to this bed and breakfast isn’t all that readily apparent. To find out, simply walk out the back door and follow the mowed trail through the meadow for a few hundred yards. As you approach the trees you’ll find you’re standing directly on top of the Niagara Escarpment. Not only that you’re now on the famed Bruce Hiking Trail. Not bad, huh?
Now, Maplewood Bed and Breakfast could seem a little out of the way. Midway between Meaford and Owen Sound, it’s about 13 kms from either. Most bed and breakfast places I select for review are a little closer to a good place for dinner. But I suspect you may now understand why you shouldn’t let that deter you.
Another reason to come becomes evident at breakfast. Now for sure it’s a very nice breakfast. We had mixed fruit, waffles with a fresh peach sauce accompanied by sausages and a choice of juices. Then there was the delicious crispy scone-like cake with a fruit layer fresh out of the oven. But it was the room itself that was extraordinary. I was blissfully transported as I sat in the light-filled space with windows on three sides all looking out on that lovely meadow.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
