Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is an Ottawa-area bed and breakfast I recommend. Janette Higgins
Looking for a bed and breakfast in Ottawa? It’s not a stretch that Domaine D’Amour should be at the top of your list for consideration. This fine B&B is located 20 minutes east of Ottawa near the villages of Vars, Embrun and Russell. I went to dinner in Ottawa’s centrally-located Glebe neighbourhood and found the drive a mere blip when you consider what’s on offer here.
Domaine D’Amour Bed and Breakfast is the creation of Luce and Denis Paquette. These warm and friendly hosts were a delight, my room was attractive and comfortable with a cosy en suite sitting room, and breakfast was taken in grand style in the formal dining room. A captivating French influence can be seen in the dining room’s rococo décor and in the wide entrance hall’s black and white tiles laid in a classic diamond pattern. Even looking out from the front door, past the large circular fountain with its formal garden, it’s easy to conjure up a French allee with vineyard beyond. Whether you simply see it for the cornfield it is, it’s truly an inspirational sight.
D’Amour was Luce’s mother’s maiden name and it was she who suggested it for the B&B. Speaking of ‘amour’ it’s perfect for those celebrating a romantic occasion. Book the Louis XV suite on the main level and be assured that it’s everything it appears to be complete with large en suite bathroom with walk in shower and Jacuzzi. You are welcome to use the Paquette’s barbecue so why not bring a picnic supper and have it in the furnished area under the covered pavilion which runs along one side of the pool. To perfect the escape perhaps you could play a game of tennis, take a dip in the pool, relax in the hot tub or walk the trails of the 13-acre property. Perhaps even indulge in the services of the registered massage therapist who’s there Wednesday through Saturday. Winters bring skating on the pond spanned by a bridge inspired by Monet. As well there is ramp up to the front door and the suite is along the hall to the right so wheelchair users could have a winner here. Just make sure your particular needs can be met.
When the easygoing Paquettes learned I was going into Ottawa for dinner they said I would have been welcome to check in after dinner. It didn’t occur to me to ask because hosts usually prefer you check in before dinner. It’s handy for you to know, though, when planning the logistics of your stay. Luce’s gracious attitude came out at breakfast too when I was a bit fussy about the sweetened yogurt on my fresh fruit cup since I prefer natural yogurt. She cheerfully removed it and I enjoyed the mix of grapes, cantaloupe, and papaya. After, I tucked into crepes with a tasty homemade strawberry sauce, the whole enhanced by an exceptional Sumatran coffee.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
