Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a bed and breakfast in Toronto I recommend. Janette Higgins

The Mulberry Tree Bed and Breakfast hosts, Carol and Paul Buer, have travelled to several continents in search of exotic locations for Paul’s colourful photographs. He’s a professional photographer and his talented ‘ouvre’ is much in evidence throughout this centrally-located Toronto bed and breakfast. You’ll find arresting colour photographs of the people and animals which inhabit places like Tunisia, Peru and India. The home's cosmopolitan décor is also enhanced by art, antiques and collectibles picked up on their trips.

After a decade in the business, Carol and Paul actually closed their bed and breakfast for a few months in 2007 so that all could be refurbished and refreshed. The walls are now a restful desert sand shade and the bright accent colours draw on some of their favourite exotic locales. They also undertook some major renovations to improve the experience for their guests. Here’s how it all stacks up.

On the second floor you'll find a guest sitting room with a bay window letting in lots of light which overlooks the pleasant street below. (I've found several Toronto B&Bs, which appear attractive in their ads, to be in dodgy neighbourhoods. Here, you’re within walking distance of Toronto’s downtown Yonge/Bloor street intersection but on a street that’s mostly well-kept residential.) There's a desk, a small table with two chairs in the bay window and a wicker-furnished sitting area. You'll also find the makings for coffee and tea and the tiniest fridge imaginable, just big enough to hold cream/milk.

The two bed & breakfast guestrooms on the second floor have en suite bathrooms. The queen-bedded Ochre Room’s bathroom has a corner shower stall. Further back, the Sahara Suite has a queen bed, plus a single bed in its anteroom – perfect for a couple with a child, or two singles. The bathroom has a tub with shower. The last room, the Peru, can be found on the third floor. It has a queen-size bed and its private-use bathroom is just across the hall.

The third floor is also where you'll now find the dining room (!). And you can head up those stairs with anticipation. Europeans are especially grateful that Carol knows their food preferences. And the rest of us don’t suffer either. The French adore the crepes, the Spanish lap up the frittatas and the Germans appreciate the special German breads. And while the usual coffee offering is organic free trade and gets rave reviews, Carol’s also prepared for any Italians who can’t live without their morning espresso.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Carol and Paul know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
