Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

There’s a ‘feel good’ factor at Unto the Hills Bed and Breakfast which makes it a perfect destination B&B. If you’re looking for time out from a hectic schedule, I suspect a stay here will lift your mood and provide enough warm memories to sustain you for the next onslaught of whatever life has on offer. Recent young guests were teary-eyed when they departed – hosts Don and Lynne Laverty have that effect on people.

Just an hour northwest of Toronto, this bed and breakfast sits atop one of the Hockley Hills at the foot of the renowned Niagara Escarpment with (truly) awesome views stretching for up to 50 kilometres. There’s even a well-maintained single-hole golf course. The French country-style house was designed by the Lavertys especially for B&B and built by quality-conscious Mennonites. Don’s engineering background came in handy – they even have a geothermal heating and cooling system ensuring a comfortable stay for guests year-round.

On arrival I was greeted warmly by the outgoing Lynne. It’s shoes off at the door, please, but Lynne provides non-skid socks and a handy bench. Beyond the spacious foyer I glimpsed the inviting guest sitting room with walkout to a deck. As I was shown around I saw that there was a refreshment area at one end of the formal dining room – guests can just help themselves to various drinks and homemade cookies. Also, those with allergies will be happy to learn there are no pets.

There are four guest bedrooms but only three in use at any one time. Each room has stylish décor and well-thought-out amenities. All have en suite bathrooms, air tubs with showers, two comfortable chairs, small electric woodstove-like fireplaces and inspiring views through large windows. The queen-bedded Dorothea Room is on the main floor near the front door and the view is across fields to distant woods. Upstairs the periwinkle-blue Hockley Room has a queen bed and wicker furniture. Two other rooms have king beds that can be made up as twins and both have walkouts to a shared balcony. The Relessey is the most expensive with a subdued gold and taupe colour scheme and two ostrich-covered leather chairs. Its air tub is designed for two..…

Next morning Lynne cooked and Don delivered. Their good humour was infectious. Turns out they’d just celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary – clearly a successful union. We had a choice of juice, fresh fruit cup, homemade muffins and raisin scones followed by Lynne’s specialty; an omelette, that’s really more like a crepe, stuffed with sauteed apples and sprinkled with cheese and shaved toasted almonds. Another day, French toast, pancakes or quiche could be on the menu. After, Don and Lynne take photos of their guests but are sensitive that some would prefer not. That would be me – since I travel incognito I don’t want my picture on view anywhere!
