Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a bed and breakfast I recommend in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Janette Higgins
Cape House Bed and Breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake aims to please. Hosts Louise and Peter Koslik work as a team so it’s not surprising to learn that they’ve run businesses together before; first a Rona hardware store, then a Benjamin Moore paint store, both in Newcastle, Ontario. Now they’re running the very fine Cape House Bed and Breakfast in Niagara-on-the-Lake’s west end. The common denominator in both communities is easy access to a harbour; essential since both are sailing enthusiasts with, as suggested by the name of their B&B, an abiding love for Cape Cod.
The Kosliks even considered Cape Cod for their bed & breakfast but, being Toronto born-and-bred, with children here, they instead opted for NOTL. The omen came when they were checking out the best places in Niagara-on-the-Lake for foodstuffs for a B&B; Louise says she was at Harvest Barn and saw potato chips under the brand name, Cape Cod. That whimsical coincidence clinched the decision. And for you, clinched a fine spot to stay.
Here’s the package. Louise and Peter are both outgoing and personable, not always the case when couples run a B&B. Second, the décor inspired by their many visits to Cape Cod is a fresh, contemporary and doily-free. Third, the breakfast is top notch and even includes dessert. Fourth, you’ll have a choice of four gathering spots; the upstairs lounge with refreshment area, the more formal living room, the back garden (until 6 PM), and the old-fashioned verandah furnished with wicker and cushions.
The sun-warmed verandah was where we were sitting enjoying a glass of wine before dinner when a guest named Bev joined us. Almost immediately she told us how she’d come to be at Cape House. She said she tried “Janette Higgins’ site” but the B&Bs they tried were booked. She then found Cape House in an online search. She raved about the day before’s breakfast and seemed pleased as punch she’d found a place that was as good as any on “Janette Higgins’ site”. I didn’t skip a beat, never letting on who I was. Since the jig is now up; Hi Bev. Thanks for being such an enthusiastic fan!
Next morning, coffee and tea were available from 8 o’clock and breakfast was served at 9 in the dining room. We started with fresh berries spiked with a splash of ice wine. Then it was onto a spinach, roasted red pepper and goat cheese frittata with salsa accompanied by homemade scones. Then, to top it off, we had broiled fresh Ontario peaches with a drizzle of raspberry Merlot. Clearly, Cape Cod’s loss is Niagara’s gain.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
