Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a Midland bed and breakfast I recommend. Janette Higgins
Midland’s Victorian Inn Bed and Breakfast has been around a long time; but never like this. In fact, new hosts Carol and John Ross closed for a few months in 2007 to completely update and redecorate putting a fresh face on this proud Victorian lady. There are three rooms with en suite bathrooms and one room that has private use of the original bathroom. That guest room is called the Royal Suite and it’s perfect for families travelling together since a smaller attached sitting room has a pullout futon bed. It’s also worth considering this room is you tend to be ‘above average’ since there’s more room in the bathroom and it has a larger shower stall.
I stayed in the queen-bedded Nautical Room with its jaunty blue-and-white décor and mid-sized bathroom. The other two rooms have had en suites put into closets meaning that the bathrooms and showers are small, as is usual in most Victorian homes retrofitted for bed and breakfast. One, the King’s chamber has a king size bed and is done in cream and green. There’s also the blue and yellow Cottage Room with twin beds, which can be made up as a king on request. All have TV/DVD players, assorted types of seating and ductless air conditioning. In the upper hall the Rosses offer a collection of DVDs and magazines as well as a refreshment area. The guest living room is downstairs.
When I stayed Carol was in Toronto tending to a sick parent, but John juggled everything in expert fashion. Nothing seemed to faze him. No doubt this aplomb served him well when he was a school principal. Though there were other guests, I was the only one to eat at the 8 o’clock time I chose. A couple of business people had eaten earlier and a family of four came down later. I had fresh fruit to start, after which John served up a cheese omelette with bacon. Other days your breakfast could include waffles, pancakes or French toast.
Whether it’s for a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine, something the guests have always enjoyed at this bed and breakfast is the wraparound porch overlooking the pleasant neighbourhood. Now it’s screened-in for cosy comfort. From the Victorian Inn Bed and Breakfast it’s but a short and pleasant stroll to the downtown shops and restaurants and further along, the harbour.
Of course if you’re looking to stay in the Midland-Penetang area you know what attractions await in this popular tourist spot. You also probably know that it pays to book in advance to get what you want. ‘Nuff said.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
