Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a Meaford (Beaver Valley) bed and breakfast I recommend. Janette Higgins

I’m in tears as I start to write this review. But it’s certainly not because of the oh-so-appealing Millhollow Bed and Breakfast hosted by Paula and Milan Stepan. In fact I quickly break into a smile as I think about all the terrific things on offer at this bed and breakfast including its quiet location across from the picturesque Big Head River. No, the tears are because I’ve just finished reading about the nearby park named for Beautiful Joe, a cruelly abused Meaford dog who became famous through Margaret Saunders' best-selling book of the same name, which was first published in 1893.

On a happier note, the Stepans considered many other places around Ontario before deciding on Meaford, an appealing small town with its own harbour which sits on the shores of Georgian Bay. Their architecturally-significant home sits on a quiet street just a few blocks from downtown. I like that it’s in a residential area a little off the beaten track and that it has an inviting front porch where you can sit and enjoy nature. Out back there’s a half acre of perennial gardens shaded by mature trees with several lounge areas for guests plus an inviting in ground pool if you should fancy a dip.

Once inside you’ll notice the attractive guest living room complete with turret and, just beyond, the dining room which includes a refreshment area. Upstairs you’ll find two simply but beautifully decorated Euro-style guest bedrooms. The Harmony Room at the front overlooks the Big Head River and its queen-size bed has a wrought-iron headboard. It has an en suite bathroom along with a cosy sitting area in its turret. White, blue and grey is used to calming effect. The Serenity Room, in sophisticated shades of green, gold and taupe, overlooks the back garden. It has a king size bed that can be made up as two twin beds and there’s a sitting area with a table and two comfy chairs. Its nearby private-use bathroom has a shower. (For those who book the Serenity there’s another room which can be rented at the same time. The bathroom would then become shared.)

As for breakfast, you choose the night before from several options. If you’d prefer savoury then pick the potato frittata with red pepper along with breakfast sausages. Craving sweet? Choose from blueberry pancakes, oatmeal buttermilk pancakes or cinnamon French toast. Traditionalists will go for sausages and eggs any way you like ’em. There’s also cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit salad and something home-baked. Think your breakfast choices were broad? You’ll have even more to choose from in this four-season tourist area that offers skiing, boating, fishing, hiking and beaches for swimming. In town there’s a day spa, opera house and several good restaurants. Or perhaps you’ll simply choose to step outside and walk the trails of Beautiful Joe Park.
