Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

I’m always thrilled when I come across a bed and breakfast I like in an unlikely location – in this case River House Bed and Breakfast just south of Massey. It’s handy to know about this place when you have plans to travel north. It’s an hour west of Sudbury and 2 hours east of Sault Ste. Marie, and it makes for an interesting place to break your journey, especially since it's so close to Manitoulin Island. There’s even a better-than-average restaurant in town called The Dragonfly.

There are any number of reasons I like this bed and breakfast. First, it’s far enough off the highway that you’re not subject to traffic noise. In fact it’s in a quiet, scenic setting south of Massey along the Spanish River. Second, it has enthusiastic young hosts who along with the help of their families have created a very clean, neat, spacious and nicely decorated bed and breakfast. Cameron McGregor and Tanya Rouleau met in Sudbury at Cambrian College where they were studying nature-based adventure tourism. They decided to return to Cameron’s home town to set up their enterprise which includes an outfitting and guiding business as well as the bed and breakfast.

The house they bought is one of the nicest in the area. It had been a private home complete with tennis court (which doubles as a basketball court) and 20’ x 40’ inground swimming pool; amenities they knew their guests would enjoy. Cameron, Tanya and their families set to work renovating and most is now done. They have a clean, bright area for guests and their own quarters are completely separate. Their decorating style is spare but not sparse and all is done in good taste. There’s a guest living room plus a finished basement with pool table and satellite TV.

I almost gave this B&B a pass because it appeared from their website that three bedrooms shared one bathroom. I’m glad I didn’t. Cameron and Tanya learned early on that renting three rooms to one bathroom wasn’t going to work so now they rent only two at a time giving you a little extra choice. All three rooms are relatively small. There is a larger queen-bedded room with an en suite bathroom and sitting area so if you really want your privacy you can have it. It's the one with a view of the Spanish River. Eventually they’d like to have en suite bathrooms for all their rooms.

Cameron and Tanya offer continental or cooked breakfast. You’ll have muffins, bagels, fruit, yogurt, juice, toast, jams, cereals and if you opt for a cooked breakfast it could be eggs and bacon with toast and hash browns or perhaps strawberry almond French toast. After you could enjoy the walking trail over their little heritage bridge or take your coffee and set awhile in the screened gazebo down by the river. There, the beautiful view may just inspire you to become an adventure tourist yourself.
