Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

When I arrived for my stay at this attractive 1865-built house I received an enthusiastic welcome from Tymparon Inn Bed and Breakfast host Zoe Timperon. She and husband Don, no less friendly as I learned the next morning, have restored their home especially for bed and breakfast. The home’s rural setting belies that it is but a few minutes to downtown Kingston. As for the name, it honours the original spelling of Don’s given surname whose ancestors came from England’s Lake District.

As I entered the front foyer I noticed the comfortable guest living room to the right and, just beyond, the richly-hued blue-and-red dining room where Zoe and Don leave the table set for breakfast. It’s all very grand what with fine china, sterling silver cutlery and Waterford crystal. I was looking forward to breakfast.

But first things first. The guest bedrooms are upstairs and all have private bathrooms, sloped ceilings, and thematic wallpaper borders along with feather toppers on the beds. I stayed in the double-bedded Mallard at the top of the stairs leading up from the foyer. Its bathroom is just outside the room so the robes you’ll find in the dresser will come in handy. The other two rooms are along the hall towards the front of the house. The Loon has a king size bed, antique reading chair and an en suite bath with shower. It’s done in warm tones of gold and deep red. The Pintail room has a queen bed, reading chair and an en suite bathroom with shower stall.

Next morning for breakfast there was OJ, hot drink of choice plus a plate of kiwi, grapes and honeydew melon to start. Zoe had baked lemon tea bread for us but for you it could be low fat muffins or cranberry bread. Our main dish was a delicious baked egg, bacon and mushroom casserole with three cheeses and a dash of hot sauce. Zoe has quite a roster of quiches, souffles, stratas, casseroles and variations of French toast up her sleeve – I don’t think you’d be served a repeat unless you stayed three weeks.

Over breakfast I learned something of interest. I’d been struck by Zoe’s unconscious dancer stance as she and Don chatted with us. When I queried as to whether she was classically trained I learned that these two are ball room dancers and ice dancers – it’s all part of their belief in staying fit while having fun. And no doubt a partial explanation of why they’re especially well set up for sports enthusiasts – they offer locked storage for bikes, kayaks, canoes and scuba gear. They also have croquet, bocce ball and horseshoes you can use. Fittingly, you’re welcome to use the hot tub on the back deck.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Zoe and Don know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
