Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
Viewpoint Bed and Breakfast books up fast for the summer. Here’s why: its capacity is limited (just two rooms), it has great breakfasts and> it has a very desirable location on a dead end street near downtown Goderich. Not to mention terrific views of Lake Huron. Settle on the wicker-furnished sun porch and be in awe of the lake’s famous sunsets as well as host Linda Jewell’s artful gardens. So my best advice to you is either book early and not be put off by the two-night minimum through the busy season, or else plan a one-night getaway in the off-season. Their VIP guest program (see their website) also offers enticements to keep coming back.
On arrival you’ll be asked to remove your shoes so you might want to bring your own indoor footwear. Duncan also likes to get the business part out of the way so you’ll probably receive your receipt then too. In my case, after ascertaining that my cover hadn’t been blown by my real name showing up on the credit card receipt, I relaxed and enjoyed my stay. Duncan switched on the gas fireplace in the guest lounge and brought me tea and home-baked goodies. We had a pleasant chat and I felt very welcome and comfortable. Guests also have access to a convenient main floor refreshment area which includes a small fridge with complimentary drinks and a Tassimo hot beverage machine for coffee, tea or hot chocolate 24/7. and are welcome to shoot a game of pool or watch TV in a large room downstairs.
This home, now newly-renovated, has been in Linda’s family since 1898 when it was bought from a Goderich shipbuilder. In homage, the two upstairs guest rooms have nautical touches. The lighthouse-themed McNevin Room is the one to book if available – it has an en suite bathroom and views of Lake Huron. There’s a king size bed which can be made up as twins and the en suite bathroom has an antique tub and shower stall. The smaller blue-and-white McLay Room features an intriguing collection of sailboats. Its bathroom is right next door at the top of the stairs. Both rooms have TVs and ceiling fans and guests are welcome to use a small side deck off the upper hall.
Next morning Duncan loves his role as chef and Linda brings on the parade of goodies. Breakfast is usually served at 9 o’clock, with coffee available at 8, but the Jewells were flexible and I had my breakfast at 8:30. I’d received a menu the night before and ticked off my choices. Even if you’re part of a duo you don’t have to choose the same thing. I started with grapefruit juice followed by a baked apple with cheddar cheese and raisins. I skipped the bagels, yogurt, English muffins and hot or cold cereal. Next came an omelet made with sun-dried tomato, shiitake mushroom and Swiss cheese. Though the omelet was huge I managed to consume every delicious morsel. Another guest chose the buttermilk pancakes served with local maple syrup. Both were accompanied by excellent bacon cured by a local butcher.
Chef Duncan also applies his culinary skills to dinner; on offer to guests who arrange it in advance. (See Viewpoint's own website under 'menus' for further details.) On second thought you may want to stay two nights in the off-season, too!
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Duncan and Linda know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
