Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend in Gananoque in the heart of the Thousand Islands. Janette Higgins

This grand old Gananoque home was given the name Beaver Hall by early owners. Now, Gananoque bed and breakfast hosts Agnes and Harrie Tieken have not only kept the historic name for their bed and breakfast but have ensured at least another 100 years for this architecturally-significant house, recipient of a recent heritage award. It's been an extensive restoration. In evidence are Harrie’s woodworking skills which, by the way, are honestly come by – kayakers will recognize the Tieken name, synonymous with Olympic-quality sea kayaks. With that business now sold the Tiekens have turned their talents to their bed and breakfast venture.

The façade of this bed and breakfast may be cool grey stone but inside all is warmth and comfort. With Agnes’ friendly welcome I felt right at home. She showed me upstairs where most of the rooms are. Mine, The Peninsula, though small, has two windows, a twin-size bed, 10’ ceilings like the rest of the house, and a thoughtful selection of furniture and amenities along with an en suite 2-piece bathroom. The room’s private-use shower is on the main floor, reached by way of a fairly private route, but if no one’s in the next door Maritime Room you’re welcome to use its shower.

Speaking of bathrooms there have been some necessary concessions to the structure and integrity of the home which means that while all rooms have their own spiffy new bathrooms; two of them are down the hall. Plush robes are supplied in every room so you can go about your business in style and comfort. If you’d like twin beds the Maritime Room does have an en suite bath with shower. Two larger and grander rooms – the King’s Room (with king bed) and the Heritage (with queen and ¾ beds) – are the ones with bathrooms down the hall. The King’s bathroom contains a Whirlpool tub and separate shower stall. The Heritage has a shower and tub. The Painters’ Suite has a queen bed in its oriental-carpeted bedroom and its sitting room has a Simmon's sofa convertible hideabed along with a fireplace and en suite 3-piece bathroom. Downstairs, there’s the large privately-situated Garden Room with queen size bed and en suite 4-piece bath with Whirlpool and separate shower stall.

Next morning I had breakfast in the dining room with Harrie as chief cook. Bacon and egg afficionados will be spoiled for choice. The night before I’d ticked off my selection of French toast with maple syrup and noted the rest of the list included 5 variations on that venerable standby. After breakfast I took a cup of tea out to the back porch where I sat in one of the cushioned wicker chairs I’d spied through a window. There, I contemplated the peaceful back yard and thought of all the lucky tourists who are meant to stay at this fine Gananoque bed and breakfast.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the Agnes and Harrie know you read my review of their Gananoque bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
