Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins
Wild Apple Hill Bed and Breakfast sits high on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment in the centre of a designated world biosphere. The apple trees dotted about are left over from a long-ago farm. You’ll pass by them if you explore the six acres of hand-cut forest trails radiating out from host Carol Deffett’s home. After retiring from careers in education she and husband, Jim, built a contemporary house in a setting that begs for superlatives. Sadly, Jim has now passed on but his gawk-worthy gardens are a lasting legacy – masses of daffodils, iris, echinacea, rudbeckias and other perennials bloom spring through fall. Travel over his hand-built stone bridge, pull into the drive, exit your car and have a look past the house. Then… what vistas await; all the way to Georgian Bay.
Inside, Carol provides a friendly welcome. It’s shoes off at the door please so you may wish to bring your own indoor footwear though Carol does provide slip-ons. She’ll bring you into the comfy living room with fireplace which hints at the monochromatic colours used throughout. To your right is a door leading to a suite of two guest rooms with shared bath. The Room with A View has a private balcony to take it all in. It’s done in cream with licks of chocolate and there’s a queen bed plus a desk and chair. If you’d like to have private use of the bath it’s just $15 extra – simply let Carol know when you call and as long as the other room isn’t booked she’ll let you have it. The second room is the queen-bedded Garden Room The chocolate theme continues though this time it’s deliciously paired with soft lilac.
Downstairs, the spacious King’s Quarters Suite has a lounge with comfortable seating, convenient dining spot and wood-burning fireplace. It has a private entrance and large windows open to the view. Radiant-heated floors provide cosiness in winter. To the left is a bedroom with king size bed. With a down duvet and feather bed topper everything is plumped and welcoming. There’s also a sink, fridge and microwave in this commodious room along with a table and chairs. On the other side of the lounge there’s a large private bathroom with shower stall and sauna.
Next morning the only noise you’re apt to hear is from Carol’s coterie of chatty blue jays snacking on peanuts. And when you show up for breakfast you’re likely to make a fuss too. After fresh fruit and muffins, Carol usually serves a large casserole of eggs with home fries, sausage or bacon. Another morning (you are staying a couple of nights aren’t you?) it might be pancakes or an egg strata. In the warmer months you’ll take it outside on the large deck where you can ogle more of Jim’s gardens and beyond that, the incredible view.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the host know you read my review. Many thanks! Janette Higgins

This bed and breakfast is located on an unpaved country road in a world biosphere preserve. It usually takes 15 minutes to get to Blue Mountain Ski Area and 10 minutes to Collingwood. |
| Directions: |
From Hwy 124 north of Duntroon and south of Nottawa/Collingwood, turn west on Nottawasaga Sideroad 33/34. (It's opposite Airport Road.) Continue past the tenth line to Blue Mountain Clearview Town Line. Turn right (north) and follow road to top of hill where you'll find bed and breakfast on the right. Note the road deadends just north of the B&B though it does pick up again a little further north. |
