Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a bed and breakfast which I recommend near Collingwood and Creemore. Janette Higgins

It was only after I was driving away from Avalon Clearview Studio Bed and Breakfast that it struck me as to why hosts Elaine and Steve Collier call their place Avalon; it comes from Arthurian legend and refers to the ‘isle of the blessed’ a fitting allusion to this entrancing area beloved by walkers, cyclists, skiiers and other nature enthusiasts. As these things do, it all started with a dream. While still in their forties the Colliers took a calculated gamble and left jobs in Etobicoke. Calculated because Elaine continues in the insurance business, but now as a consultant with more control over her time and Steve, formerly in high tech marketing, now works as a stained glass artist whose intricate panels are inspired by the nature that surrounds him. They bought this then-bungalow and repurposed it for bed and breakfast by adding a lower level on the back slope.

Much thought has gone into this bed and breakfast. Guests have a private entrance on the lower level where they’ll find the guest lounge with TV and gas fireplace and three B&B guest rooms each with a remarkable view over meadow and pond to the Bruce Trail which passes through Devil’s Glen Provincial Park and the Mad River Valley. Rising beyond, are the trails of Devil’s Glen Ski Resort. Each room has an en suite bathroom and in-floor radiant heating with its own thermostat. The Tuscany has a king bed (or twins) and a soaker tub with shower and two sinks. The other two have queen beds. The English Rose has a gas fireplace and Jacuzzi tub with hand-held shower. Provence has a soaker tub with shower. Movies and DVD players are available; even a dryer for wet clothes. Those with bikes, ski gear or motorcycles can lock them in the garage.

Early risers will find tea, juice and Tim Hortons coffee in the lounge. Breakfast is taken upstairs, in the dining room with fireplace and paintings by local artists. From here you can see across the hills for 50 miles even without aid of the finely calibrated telescope which awaits the curious. Breakfast could start with Harlequin Apples one of Steve’s specialities. There are also the usual add-ons including juice, yogurt, cereals and Elaine’s homemade granola plus something she’s baked, perhaps blueberry muffins. The main course could be a veggie frittata with pancetta or Mexican eggs with capicolla.

The good-natured hosts will even do group dinners and gourmet weekends if you give them enough advance notice. Not a bad idea since it can take a few years to get a reservation at the nearby, and very pricey, Eigensinn Farm where world-famous Chef Michael Stadtlander works his magic. Other options include restaurants in nearby Singhampton and in Collingwood and Creemore 20 minutes away.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
