Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

Jordan House Bed and Breakfast is the lovely historical home of Barbara and John Jordan. They are, in fact, the fifth generation Jordans to occupy this spot just off Highway 401 near Chatham. First there was a log cabin, then a frame house and now this splendid version of a 1900 Edwardian served up as a fine bed and breakfast.

Barbara has a discerning eye for décor and she’s created a cosy ambiance with rich historical colours and draperies that pool elegantly on the floor. Things are a bit lighter in summer when she changes some of the draperies and bed linens. For example, in fall/winter the mustard-toned dining room has olive draperies while in spring/ summer the curtains are cheery red gingham.

As for the bed and breakfast guest bedrooms, there are four and all have hairdryers, en suite bathrooms, linens ironed with a spritz of lavender and wonderfully comfortable beds with feather pillows The secret to the beds seems to be a feather ticking on top of a foam mattress. (If you’re allergic to feathers all can be substituted.) The largest bed and breakfast guest room (as well as shower stall/bathroom) is the Kent off the main floor entrance hall. It has a queen bed, two wingback chairs, an electric fireplace and several leaded and stained glass windows. There’s also a double pedestal desk and, as with all the rooms, you have a choice of wireless or hardwired internet.

The other three rooms, a guest lounge with TV and conveniently equipped kitchenette are upstairs. The Essex is the largest and its bed can be either a king or extra long twins (no footboard). The sink is in an alcove and the shower stall and toilet are in a compact spot behind a closed door. There’s a desk and a couple of antique burgundy leather chairs for comfort. The Norfolk has a queen bed with blue and white toile bed coverings in summer and fluffy duvets in winter. A slipper chair occupies a corner and there’s also a small table which could be used for a laptop. Its 3-piece bathroom is tucked into a former closet. The smallest room is the double-bedded Wessex. Its advantage (besides being an inviting spot for cocooning) is the large bathroom with original marble sink and clawfoot tub with handheld shower. There are also wardrobes in each room.

Next morning you’ll have a candle-lit breakfast in the dining room and in winter there’ll be a wood fire in the fireplace. Weekdays, breakfast is simpler but on weekends they spice things up with perhaps a frittata or other special dish. I was there on a weekday and had fresh fruit to start, then bacon and eggs with a tasty whole grain toast.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Barbara and John know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
