Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is a Burlington bed and breakfast I recommend. Janette Higgins
I once had a friend who took a bath every night and often rhapsodized about the experience. Now I’m a shower kind of gal but every once in awhile I gain some insight into my friend’s reasoning. In fact it happened at Cottage on LaSalle Bed and Breakfast hosted by Penelope Marshall who, along with husband, Brian, renovated this 1860s log cabin into a charming bed and breakfast complete with inviting bath. The spacious room is beautifully lit and there's a newly-reglazed cast iron clawfoot tub tucked into an alcove with all the amenities you need for a sensuous experience including candles. It’s a reminder to slow down and savour the moment. And that’s just what I did. For those in hurry-up mode, though, there is a marble-walled glass shower stall. The floor is heated and the colours are pristine white and creamy chocolate.
Now I know most of you are looking for private or en suite bathrooms but every once in awhile I review a B&B with a bath shared by no more than two rooms because it otherwise exceeds my expectations. Of course the price has to fairly reflect what’s on offer. For me there’s an upper limit on a shared bath no matter how beautiful the home. Cottage on LaSalle Bed and Breakfast has it right.
The winding-down experience begins with the approach along Burlington’s scenic North Shore Blvd. You’ll turn right onto LaSalle Park Road, a pleasant tree-lined residential street, and drive just a block and a half north. You’ll be greeted by Penelope, a former nurse, who radiates warmth. Her nurturing way extends to her guests. She set me up with tea and shortbread after dinner, gave me a raincoat for the rain and even offered a shawl in case I was cold. Inside, all is attractively decorated and there was a furnished sun porch with two of the most comfortable chairs I’ve ever put my hindside into. They glide back and forth and their ottomans glide along in unison. I settled into one with a few magazines, including some from England. It turns out there’s a real U.K. connection here – Penelope met husband Brian a few years ago when she was visiting London. And upstairs the larger of the two gabled guest rooms, the Herritt, is named for Penelope’s ancestors who came from Scotland in 1776 (!) on the sailing ship Hector. It has a queen bed. The smaller double-bedded Holland Room is adjacent to the bath and is named after her parents, her dad being a leading entomologist of his time.
Next morning, it was Penelope’s breakfast that clinched the deal. Her buttery cream scones fairly melted in my mouth. The wild blueberries (yes, those tiny tasty ones) and strawberries could be piled high with whipped cream if one chose, And for someone who knows her pastry the portabella mushroom quiche with tomatoes and basil was a natural choice. As for me it was only natural that I’d choose to drop my cover and pick her bed and breakfast for my site.
Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
