Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend in Bloomfield in Prince Edward County. Janette Higgins

Nap-N-Nosh bed and breakfast hosts, Sonny and Jane Stevens, lived in the Far East for many years, raising their family while Sonny enjoyed his facilities management career with the Canadian Foreign Service. Living in Asia also allowed them to indulge their considerable passion for antiques. Two container loads to be precise. So it only follows that this large 1875-built bed and breakfast is home to a truly impressive collection of Asian antiques.

As for more prosaic considerations, while this bed and breakfast is right on Bloomfield’s main shopping street there’s no problem with parking. There’s plenty out back where you’ll have a chance to admire the rest of the acre or so property which boasts a large pond surrounded by gardens. When we showed up we were welcomed by Sonny who invited us to make ourselves at home in the guest-only lounge with TV. Beyond was the dining room and off to one side, a cosy sitting alcove with fireplace. On a notice board in the hall I glimpsed next morning’s imaginative breakfast menu which sure did set my taste buds a-tingling.

Sonny then showed us upstairs where we passed through a refreshment area with small fridge and other amenities, then by the king (or twin) bedded Xi’an Room which has a large private-use full bathroom nearby and reflects the family’s years in China. Ours was at the back; the Indian-inspired Raj Room with queen bed and newly-installed en suite bath with shower. At the front of the house, and representing Thailand, is the Siam Room, also with queen bed and new shower-only bathroom. In all the rooms the antiques and wall décor are richly complemented by the exotic fabrics.

Next morning is when Jane shines. She’s developed a list of yummy breakfasts. Ours was fruit in phyllo pastry with spiced yogurt followed by an eggy baked pancake (one of my breakfast faves) with maple syrup and bacon. Yours might be caramelized peaches followed by an enticing savoury dish such as poached eggs with burnt sage butter and asparagus. And if you’re tempted to stay another night or two no doubt Jane will make it worth your while; more than ten tempting offerings have made it onto her roster.

And if you do stay a couple or three nights in Bloomfield you’ll have no difficulty finding diversions. The County, as it’s known, is a treasure trove of shops, wineries, galleries, restaurants, artist’s studios, and farm gate markets. Even the renowned Sandbanks Provincial Park, with its remarkable beaches, is but a mere 15 kms from Bloomfield. Dialing yet?
